Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY
Lake Travis Fire Rescue is seeking an experienced Fleet Technician IIto perform master mechanic level duties in the preventative maintenance inspection and repair of administrative supervisory and emergency response apparatus and other equipment for the District as well as other fire departments. This position is a full-time non-exempt position.

PRIMARY DUTIES
Due to operational needs a fleet mechanic may be assigned to all or some of the following:
  • Performs preventative maintenance periodic inspections and repair of all District vehicles.
  • Performs schedules and/or coordinate repairs on all emergency vehicles such as engine overhauls pump repairs hydraulic equipment repairs electrical fluid systems braking systems valves regulators etc. to ensure optimal performance under emergency conditions.
  • Exchanges rebuilds and overhauls motors transmission differentials and other motor vehicle
  • components and systems as needed including coordinating outside contract work when needed.
  • Performs diesel engine capacity and performance tests.
  • Performs test drives and diagnoses drive-train and chassis problems.
  • Identifies and diagnoses defective mechanical problems and provides solutions in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates conducts and/or contracts out testing and certifications on vehicles as required by District policies and procedures or local state or federal regulations.
  • Works with District fleet design teams during initial designing process pre-builds construction and final inspections of vehicles.
  • Performs new vehicle acceptance tests.
  • Receives and executes direction from multiple fire departments.
  • Coordinates and prioritizes fleet repairs and projects with multiple fire departments.
  • Keeps current with industry training continuing education on specialized certification requirements and District assigned training.
  • Adheres to all safety guidelines such as but not limited to: working with others safely handling tools properly and disposing of liquids appropriately.
  • Assists District personnel on proper apparatus inspection operation and preventive maintenance.
  • Instructs others in proper minor repair procedures and use of automated testing equipment.
  • Properly articulates malfunctions warranties parts and service information to other service technicians.
  • Orders and tracks supplies parts and materials; manages and/or prepares purchase requests and reports which involves vendors contractors or manufactures.
  • Requisitions supplies checks deliveries and maintains records of work performed.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience servicing fire apparatus
  • Current valid Texas Class A or B Driver License
  • Within one year of employment obtain Level 1 Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification
  • Within three years of employment obtain Level 3 Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification
Preferred:
  • Associates or Bachelors Degree
  • 8-10 years of experience servicing fire/rescue apparatus including knowledge of fleet equipment function specifications and deployment
  • Experience working and coordinating service to multiple fire departments
  • Master Level Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification

  • Ability to work regularly with other managers to successfully meet the goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Ability to perform work that encompasses advanced technical scientific legal or mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to oversee and manage work involving multiple units for multiple organizations and properly prioritize project priority.
  • Ability to read understand follow and enforce safety procedures.
  • Knowledge and ability to follow District policies and record-keeping procedures.
  • Ability to use automotive diagnostic equipment and hand and power tools.
  • Ability to test drive all vehicles repaired.
  • Ability to perform diesel engine capacity tests.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance repair techniques electrical and computerized systems and emission control systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and perform complex automotive vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to estimate repairs requisition parts and supplies to maintain accurate records to work with electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to serve as a lead worker providing direction to others.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Ability to quickly learn District software and similar computer applications.
