Job Summary

The Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. Rooted in a bilingual education approach we ensure full access to American Sign Language and English across comprehensive academic extracurricular and student life partnership with families and communities we empower students to think critically and develop a sense of self and belonging.

We are currently accepting applications to create a pool of qualifiedindividuals who can work on an as needed basis to temporarily continue thelessons planned for the children on any given day.

Main Purpose of Job
Substitute teaching assignments may change based on the needs of the school. A substitute teacher may be asked to accept assignments outside his/her background or educational training. They may also be asked to cover classes during a planning period. It is not expected that a substitute teacher be able to teach new or unfamiliar materials but rather make every attempt to follow the lesson plan and manage student behavior in the most positive way possible.
POSITION DUTIES
Follow the lesson plan left by the teacher and ensure students completeall assigned tasks maintain a safe environment keep students under directsupervision at all times leave information concerning the days activities forthe teacher and maintain strict confidentiality of students and schoolpersonnel information.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High Schooldiplomaplus 60 college credits or a verified former HowardCountyteacher.

Fluency in AmericanSign Language and written English required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree preferred. Experience working with a diversestudent population including underserved students strong classroom managementskills and knowledge of the Deaf Community preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
New hires are subjectto a criminal background investigation at their own expense. (MarylandCode Family Law Article 1 Sections)

Candidates will need toprovide three letters of recommendation.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS
Please note that all contractual agreements andstaffing allocations are subject to adjustment based on student enrollment andoperational needs.
BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage accidental death and dismemberment insurance and life insurance but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
