Short overview of what the role will do to support students and District function or operation

Essential Duties

The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.

As the Expulsions Program Administrator you will:

  • Lead the coordination of the expulsion process by acting as an intermediary between the school sites the SFUSD Legal Department LEAD and the divisions Operations & Administration Team
  • Identify student academic and behavioral needs and identify district systems of support and interventions to address those needs
  • Meet required timelines for each step of expulsion process:
    • Assemble all required documentation for cases referred for expulsion.
    • Recruit and train Expulsion hearing panelists and act as Hearing officer during expulsion hearings
    • Draft report of the expulsion panels recommendation for presentation to the Board of Education
    • Communicate final decisions to the student and their family the referring school administrator and create a rehabilitative transition plan for the student.
    • Work collaboratively with sites and families to develop action plans and recommendations to address those needs; exercise sound judgment to identify when student behavior presents a safety concern
    • Organize draft and finalize reports/decisions concerning student discipline that articulate mandatory guidelines interventions and procedures based on federal state and local policy and law.
  • Coordinate and support reentry conferences for students who are returning to a comprehensive middle or high after the term of their expulsion or the term of a Stipulated Expulsion Agreement (SEA)
  • Coordinate and support record requests for expulsion cases as needed review and coordinate expulsion expungement requests and other expulsion related duties as needed.
  • Work collaborative with cross-divisional team to support implementation of districtwide Multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS)
  • Work collaboratively with cross divisional/district teams to support SFUSD behavior matrix Restorative Practices and Violence Interruption work.
  • Select train supervise and evaluate certificated or classified employees
  • Facilitate use of data and data strategies
  • Supporting audit/reporting responsibilities
  • Makes autonomous decisions related to design and execution (e.g. workload/ assignments of self and direct reports)
  • Complete additional relevant tasks and duties as required by the Assistant Superintendent of the Student and Family Services Division

  • Strong analytics and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy as well as build infrastructure where none exists
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple functions and roles within a complex organization
  • A proven record of effectively planning organizing and using resources to take action and achieve goals
  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt as needed in a fast-paced environment
  • Outstanding organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • A flexible can do work ethic with a focus on identifying challenges and proactively working to find solutions while maintaining a bigger picture lens and focus on what can be delivered instead of what cannot be done
  • Excellent data analysis skills and experience synthesizing data to drive action steps
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with senior level district staff and colleagues
  • Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to clearly communicate complex bureaucratic processes to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to define and implement effective HR business practices
  • Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook Word Excel and PowerPoint) and GSuite (Google Docs Slides Sheets Forms)

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Valid California Administrative Services Credential or eligibility for a California Administrative Services Credential.
  • 1 year of applicable knowledge/experience related to expulsion/ ed code compliance/due process requirements
