About this role:

The University of Pittsburgh seeks a collaborative emotionally intelligent and clinically grounded leader to serve as the next Executive Director of the University Counseling Center (UCC). Reporting to the Executive Associate Dean and Chief Wellness Officer this leader will guide one of the Universitys most important student support resources during a period of significant opportunity and evolution within collegiate mental health.

The Executive Director will lead a highly skilled and deeply committed multidisciplinary team responsible for counseling services crisis intervention outreach prevention programming consultation embedded clinical services and training programs. This role is equally operational strategic and relational balancing high-quality student-centered care with sustainable clinical operations organizational culture and staff well-being.

The University is seeking a leader who can build trust authentically foster transparency and collaboration and thoughtfully guide the centers continued growth while preserving the strong clinicalexpertiseand collegial culture already in place.

Scope & Impact

  • Provide strategic operational and clinical leadership for the University Counseling Center within a large public research university environment
  • Lead and support a multidisciplinary team of therapists psychologists social workers trainees and embedded clinicians
  • Foster a culture grounded in trust transparency accountability collaboration and psychological safety
  • Strengthen organizational communication role clarity and shared understanding across teams
  • Balance student access and responsiveness with sustainable clinical practice and clinician well-being
  • Oversee departmental operations including staffing budgeting workflow management assessment and reporting
  • Ensure compliance with ethical legal accreditation and professional standards including IACS AUCCCD and CCMH participation
  • Advance integrated approaches to student wellness through collaboration with Student Affairs Student Health Services Care and Resource Support campus safety and academic partners
  • Utilize assessment operational insight and data-informed decision-making to support strategic planning and continuous improvement
  • Serve as a visible and trusted campus leader and advocate for student mental health and well-being
  • Contribute as a divisional leader within Student Affairs helping advance broader initiatives related to student success belonging engagement and wellness

Qualifications

  • Earned degree in psychology counseling social work or a related mental health field (doctoral degree preferred)
  • 7 years of relevant clinical experience and licensure (or license eligibility)
  • Progressive leadership experience within a university counseling center higher education mental health setting or similarly complex clinical environment
  • Experience supervising clinicians and multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong operational administrative andfinancial managementexperience
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust foster collaboration and lead through complexity and organizational change
  • Commitment to ethical student-centered care and inclusive excellence
  • Strong communication relationship-building and emotional intelligence skills
  • Experience balancing clinical excellence operational effectiveness and organizational culture
  • Understanding of the relationship between student well-being learning belonging and student success
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and campus stakeholders
  • Cultural humility anddemonstratedability to lead within diverse environments
