Environmental Specialist I

Position SummaryThis position under limited direction of the Environmental Supervisoris responsible formonitoring and inspecting the compliance of industries included in the Industrial Pretreatment Programs administered by the NTMWD. This individual willmaintainand review permits applications self-monitoringreportsand laboratory data. Also responsible for conducting fieldstudies and taking field measurements asrequired. Performs manual work associated with various assigned ResponsibilitiesConducts inspections to check for compliance with Industrial Waste Ordinance and/or Federal CategoricalStandards updates existing information files and investigatespossible changesor additions to facility permit applications industrial waste permits self-monitoringreportsand current pretreatment permitting process including drafting permit renewals for existing of monitoring reports and enters data events andpermitchanges into industrial waste survey process toidentifypotential new industries within service trainsoperates and troubleshoots automatic sampling and monitoring equipment to perform fieldsampling and properly completes and handles chain-of-custody compliance and routine monitoring samples for laboratory analyses on water and wastewater samples atwater distribution sites surface water sites industrial users treatment plants or collection standard operating procedures and work instructions and revises as training department personnel in technical and safety monitoring and surveillance activities of the collection system which may include visual observations dyetesting sample collection in the on-call rotation and leads on-site during emergency response procedures related to accidental spills and/or discharges into the sanitary sewer ground or receiving streams or lakes and completes response daily logs and calibrations and performs tasks which require mathematical safe work practices through the use of proper safety equipment and in audits from partnering or regulatory agencies by providing knowledge of program requirements and technical other duties as RequirementsEducation & Experience:Bachelors degree in the field of environmental science or related field or the equivalent obtain a Texas Commission of Environmental Quality Class D Water Operators license within six months ofhire and a Class C Water Operators license Texas drivers Skills & Abilities:Must possess a broad knowledge of industrial waste treatment and local state and federal laws pertaining to environmental to make decisions ability with careful attention to to deal tactfully and effectively with others in areas of investigations and data to read and understand pipeline utility and construction maps and of water and wastewater treatment plant operations. Environmental and Physical Working ConditionsDriving a District vehicle for business may be required. Employees required to drive as part of their job duties are responsible for maintaining a current valid and vehicle - appropriate driver s license of their resident position requires moderate physical exertion with occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. General mobility required to conduct field sampling. Working conditions include exposure to weather chemical hazards and gases. Equipment usedincludes vehicles boats computers/tablets automatic samplers field-testingequipmentand some laboratory equipment.
