BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933 the International Rescue Committee is a leading non-sectarian non-profit organization providing emergency relief protection rehabilitation assistance resettlement services and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically our 29 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food shelter and clothing and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK: The intern will assist the Adult Education Specialist with various aspects of the programs. Tasks may include setting up the classroom making copies answering clients questions regarding language and culture assisting with classroom activities data entry and occasionally providing child watch and transportation

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend ESOL and Cultural Orientation classes on designated days
  • Arrive a few minutes early to check in with teacher about the days classroom activities
  • Assist students with class assignments.
  • Assist with set-up and tear-down during Cultural Orientation
  • Provide supervision when needed for young children when present
  • Help integrate digital literacy in the classroom
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Record hours and submit completed timesheet for each month via the IRCs online Volunteer Dashboard.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree or recent graduate
  • Patient reliable and flexible
  • Exposure to global environments and languages is a plus.
  • While a personal vehicle is not required it would be helpful on occasion.

This position is unpaid and reports to the Adult Education Specialist.
