What you will be doing:

Under general supervision of a higher-level engineer this position performs a variety of basic/entry level engineering duties by selecting and applying accepted and standard engineering practices associated with the construction of roads bridges buildings airports utilities harbor facilities or other engineering projects.

• The Engineering Assistant 1 is an entry level position where the incumbent will usually be assigned to an individual project and participate in various project tasks including inspection or Office Engineering. This class is reserved for college graduate engineers architects or land surveyors or persons who possess an Engineering-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate or verification letter issued by the State of Alaska or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES).

• The Engineering Assistant 2position is for applicants that can demonstrate additional experience or education that allows them to participate on a project with little or no additional training. This is reserved for incumbents with Masters level Engineering Degrees or with Experience in similar work environments.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is permanently stationed in Anchorage. The incumbent is generally assigned to a field construction team during the summer construction season. Construction assignments can be on the road system ranging from Homer Alaska to Milepost 202 on the Parks Highway and Milepost 137 on the Glenn Highway or could also be off the road system in a community within Central Region DOT. As such the successful incumbent will perform field inspections measurements develop documentation and conduct quality reviews on Federal and State civil construction projects. This position requires you to be outdoors including in inclement weather in shifts of up to 10 hours or more a day and up to seven days a week including weekends holidays and possibly nights. You will be around heavy equipment dust noise etc. This job may also require you to travel to remote sites by small airplane boat and/or motor vehicle.

Engineering Assistant 1
Bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

Or:
A bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

Special Note:
An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelors degree from an institution accredited by ABET with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.

Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.

Engineering Assistant 2
Bachelors degree or the equivalent with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
One year of entry level engineering architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
A bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
AND
One year of entry level engineering architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
