First level manager providing leadership technical direction and oversight to Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) engineers technical support personnel and potentially subcontract employees. Responsible for maintaining safe working conditions and safety awareness establishing goals expectations and priorities and integrating work within the supervised organization. Monitors department workload to ensure staff is cognizant of cost schedule and technical commitments. Advises management of staffing needs necessary to address both forecast and emerging workload. Develops reviews and/or approves budgets proposals cost estimates schedules and related documents required to meet customer needs. Frequent contact with external and internal customers is required.
Performs Criticality Safety Analysis of equipment processes and procedures prescribing correct methods control requirements and limitations. Performs or participates in surveillance inspections walkthroughs appraisals or audits of fissile material operations to ensure compliance with Nuclear Criticality Safety Approvals Nuclear Safety rules including Safety Analysis Reports Safety Assessments Safety Reviews and risk assessments/analyses.
Provides operating areas with specific NCS professional interpretations and advice. Provides training to employees in basic criticality safety. Validates maintains and operates nuclear computer codes and nuclear cross-sections.

- Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico the Washington Accord or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET. Requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e. Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
- Prior qualification as an NCS engineer at a DOE or NRC regulated facility
- Experience in MCNP and/or KENO
- Demonstrated familiarity with the applicable national consensus codes standards and DOE requirements/guidelines used in NCS evaluation
- Demonstrated skill in effective planning writing organization communication schedule compliance and management of technical issues
