Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities
Perform routine diagnostic studies and services. Extensive knowledge of electroencephalography (EEG) nerve conduction studies (NCS) and evoked potentials (EP).
Requires experience in a clinical neurophysiology setting. Must have knowledge of medical terminology neuroanatomy neurological conditions and their presentation on EEGs
Knowledge of basic concepts of electricity and electronics to understand potential sources of artifacts caused by electrical interference and the basic electronics of the instrumentation to include its abilities and limitations.
Adhere to safety policies and procedures in accordance with the MTF policies.
Determine if any special patient preparation is required.
Modify or adjust the recording strategy and/or instrument parameters based on the technologists evaluation of recorded data to ensure a complete comprehensive and technically satisfactory study.
Process studies and submit to the requesting/interpreting physician.
Document all procedures and maintain records in accordance with the established policy at the place of performance.
As directed perform system calibrations and quality control tasks according to the manufacturer and MTF policies.
Recognize the need for and institute the necessary emergency measures for situations where a person requires resuscitation procedures due to cardiac or respiratory arrest.
Apply EEG NCS EP concepts and fundamental skills to various patient demographics to include but not limited to neonates through geriatrics patient clinical states from stable to critically ill and outpatient clinic inpatient ward emergency room and intensive care unit settings adjusting equipment based on the age of the patient.
Detect disorders of EEG NCS EP of the central and peripheral nervous systems to include but not limited to recognizing the manifestation of seizure disorders.
Accurately place 10-20 electrode system as well as other supplemental electrode sites.
Medical providers residents interns fellows students trainees volunteers and other staff may shadow steps and procedures of proper placement and usage of EEG EP and NCS concepts.
After approval of physician or provider independently adjust procedures to account for anatomical defects variants and anomalies making necessary technical factor corrections and/or utilize special and/or additional components of the study when clinically indicated.
Perform independent data review and analysis of patient medical record and history to properly design and/or adjust after approval of the physician or provider the ordered study.
Understand and recognize signs symptoms and EEG correlations for both pediatric and adult neurological disorders.
Serve as training proctor for undergoing EEG NCS or EP training.
Performs schedules and administers specialized electroencephalograms on patients in laboratory inpatient wards to include but not limited to neonate pediatric intensive care unit critical care unit emergency room and neonatal nursery areas to record various brain wave patterns and/or identify precise artifacts to include but not limited to recording eye movement and/or tremors from various parts of the body.
Sterilize equipment in accordance with hospital infection control procedures.
Perform long term continuous epilepsy monitoring.
Conducts various specialized neurological examinations and complex procedures on patients of all ages.
Under the oversight of attending electrodiagnostic physician performs routine sensory and motor nerve conduction studies.
Performs a variety of evoked potential studies including but not limited to brain stem auditory evoked response (BAER) visual evoked response (VER) and somatosensory evoked response (SSEP).
May have to perform advanced evoked studies involving toposograhic display fields of evoked studies and nonstandard evoked potential evaluations.
Prepares patient and equipment for electromyographic (EMG) examinations performed by physicians. Saves and transfers completed study data as directed. Assist physician in the performance of the EMG as needed.
Cleans and sterilizes all equipment electrodes and turns over work areas in preparation for next patient in accordance with CRDAMC MTF infection control policies and procedures.
Review make and ensure electrodiagnostic (EDX) appointments are scheduled appropriately in accordance with physician request and direction.
Performs operator maintenance of all EDX equipment as required.30. Maintains established levels of supplies in procedure and treatment areas.
Reports to government representative malfunctions and maintenance requirements for EDX lab and other areas of equipment.
Maintains work area in a neat and orderly condition.
Prepares for emergency EEGs utilizing various equipment and supplies.
Records and deliver tracings to neurology service. Enter and upload all pertinent patient data into computer prior to delivering the completed tests to the reading room for interpretation.
Minimum Requirements
US Citizen
Associates degree in neuroscience biology or related field is preferred but not required.
Must complete an accredited EEG technologist training program and be formally trained as an Electroencephalogram (EEG) Technician.
Must be ABRET-certified EEG Technician through the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET).
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and (BLS) Basic Life Support. American Heart association
Minimum 1 year of post-graduate clinical experience within the last 2 years performing EEG procedures
Including:
Conducting routine EEG studies.
Preparing patients and operating neurodiagnostic equipment.
Identifying normal and abnormal brain wave patterns.
Supporting diagnostic evaluations per professional standards.
Maintaining documentation patient safety and collaboration with physicians and care teams
