Job Summary
The Electrical Safety Officer supports Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) by providing technical leadership and field expertise for the Electrical Safety Program. This position serves as a primary resource for electrical safety concerns and works closely with project managers engineers craft personnel work planners and field professionals to ensure electrical hazards are properly evaluated and safe work practices are effectively implemented.
The ideal candidate brings strong electrical engineering power distribution or master electrician experience and can independently evaluate electrical systems perform energy and hazard calculations interpret electrical codes and review system models. This is a hands-on field-focused role requiring 100% onsite support at LANL.
Serve as a primary point of contact for electrical safety and support administration and implementation of the LANL Electrical Safety Program.
Provide electrical safety support to construction and field activities working directly with project managers engineers craft personnel work planners and other field professionals.
Identify and evaluate electrical hazards involving low-voltage AC and DC systems including systems up to 1000 volts.
Perform electrical energy incident severity and related hazard calculations to support safe work planning and incident evaluation.
Review and evaluate electrical distribution systems and system models including SKM PowerTools models as applicable.
Conduct workplace inspections and safety assessments to identify hazardous conditions and recommend corrective actions.
Lead or support electrical incident investigations determine root causes calculate electrical severity scores and develop corrective actions.
Review Integrated Work Documents (IWDs) Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and other work-control documentation for electrical safety compliance.
Interpret and apply applicable electrical codes standards and requirements including NFPA 70E OSHA requirements IEEE standards and other relevant electrical codes.
Contribute to the development and revision of electrical safety policies procedures design standards specifications and safe work practices.
Evaluate controlled items equipment and services for compliance with applicable electrical safety requirements.
Provide advanced technical support to engineers scientists and project teams in resolving complex electrical safety issues.
Bachelors degree and at least 7 years of relevant field experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Advanced knowledge of electrical safety requirements and standards particularly NFPA 70E as well as applicable OSHA IEEE and electrical code requirements.
Demonstrated experience evaluating electrical hazards and electrical systems including low-voltage AC and DC applications up to 1000 volts.
Ability to perform electrical energy calculations and technical evaluations used to determine hazards and appropriate controls.
Strong background in electrical engineering electrical distribution system engineering electrical construction or code interpretation.
Experience reviewing technical work documents LOTO procedures electrical safety plans or comparable work-control documentation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical requirements to both technical and non-technical personnel.
Strong organizational leadership collaboration and technical problem-solving skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other standard computer systems/software.
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy Q-level security clearance.
Ability to successfully complete Radiological Worker II training.
Ability to work 100% onsite in Los Alamos New Mexico.
Electrical system or power distribution engineering experience.
Experience using or evaluating SKM PowerTools electrical system models.
Master Electrician background or significant experience interpreting and applying electrical codes.
Experience supporting electrical safety within DOE NNSA national laboratory nuclear industrial construction or other highly regulated environments.
Current or previously held DOE Q clearance.
Field experience identifying electrical hazards and developing practical controls for energized or potentially energized work.
