Job Summary

Bay Ship & Yacht Co. is a modern shipyard located on the waterfront of San Francisco Bay. We provide dry-docking and repair services to commercial and government vessels including tugboats ferries Coast Guard cutters cruise ships pilot boats yachts and marine vessels of all kinds. The Dockmaster has the potential in conjunction with the project team to make sure that the customers experience in the yard meets or exceeds Bay Ship & Yachts mission statement of Absolute Customer Satisfaction.

The Dockmaster is responsible for the effective management of drydock operations personnel risk facilities and equipment.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Create blocking plans for intact or damaged vessels using a variety of source materials including hired divers
  • Ensure that all vessels in Bay Ship & Yachts custody are berthed and secured in a manner that will ensure their safety under constantly changing weather and sea conditions.
  • Maintain all syncrolift railways and associated equipment in a good state of repair.
  • Interpret drawings specifications about the job order materials and write reports to generate new work.
  • Ensure work areas are secure upon completion of assigned shift.
  • Recognize and communicate any problems.
  • Lead crews to obtain top quality workmanship efficiency employee satisfaction morale communication commitment teamwork and pride.
  • Layout blocking on drydocks and syncrolift cradles based on block plans
  • Splice 3 strand ropes.
  • Build keel and bilge blocks cradles and shoring for supporting ships in dry dock marine railways shipways or building docks using woodworking hand and power tools.
  • Use centering chains lasers and magnetic tapes.
  • Identify various types of wood (Oak Pine Salt Treated Composite etc.)
  • Identify various types of ropes (Nylon Samson single braided double braided synthetic manila etc.)
  • Be proficient in dry dock railway and boat lift line handling.
  • Moor vessels using different types of mooring equipment (Cleats bitts bollard bitts chocks H bitt etc.).
  • Tie various knots (Barge hitch Tow bridal).
  • Operate the following equipment completing any required training beforehand:
    • Drydock equipment (Capstan grip hoist flood valves discharge valves)
    • Aircraft tow tractor
    • Cradle jacks (250 ton)
    • Forklifts
    • Impact wrench
    • Come a long
    • Winches
    • JLGs
    • Small boats Oil booms moving floats and Yokoyamas.
  • Perform basic chainsaw operation (Startup blade change general maintenance).
  • Train on emergency procedures relating to drydocks and syncrolift.
  • Complete the maintenance tasks of dry docks and syncrolift successfully.
  • Locate Stern Reference Points (SRP).
  • Perform rigging duties as needed.
  • Read and understand table of offsets.
  • Instruct hooking up tugs to vessels.
  • Identify all piers and berthing locations within the shipyard.
  • Adhere to safety policy and wear personal protective equipment- hard hat safety glasses steel toe boots/shoes and when necessary respirator
Qualifications:
  • Must have at least eight (8) years of maritime experience in trade.
  • Must have some technical training and experience in the fundamentals of dry-dock operations ensuring safe docking and undocking of vessels using systems like floating drydocks Syncrolift and marine railways.
  • Must ensure compliance with safety environmental quality and operational requirements.
  • Must have an understanding of math calculations.
  • Must have knowledge of and the ability to use and train the use of hand tools and instruments associated with the department.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be able to work independently to complete responsibilities.
  • Must be able to comprehend and follow complex instructions.

The pay range is $140k-$150k per year DOE.
