Job Summary

Position Summary:
The District Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for volunteer coordination district-wide supports land management at Lyman Woods and Belmont Prairie assists with Interpretive Center staffing and provides program support.

Hours:
The position works 4 consecutive days (either Sunday through Wednesday or Wednesday through Saturday) but may be adjusted depending on candidates availability. Typical work hours are between 8:30am-4:30pm occasional evenings required. The District Volunteer Coordinator may work up to 29 hours a week on average or a total of no more than 1500 hours per year.
Pay: $20.50 per hour (budgeted)

Essential Functions
  • Recruit volunteers using online and in-person communication and platforms.
  • Manage volunteers District-wide through recruitment onboarding training scheduling supervision evaluation retention and recognition.
  • Work closely with District Department Heads and Supervisors for volunteer needs.
  • Keep up-to-date program records check-in/check-out sheets volunteer hours applications etc.
  • Maintain and manage supply inventory.
  • Aid in the care and maintenance of outdoor play areas gardens bee yard and trails by mulching weeding trimming watering planting and moving supplies.
  • Remove invasive or nuisance species from trails and programming spaces
  • Occasionally teach classes on nature-related topics as needed. Program audiences include parent & toddlers schools scouts youth teens and adults.
  • Perform front desk duties and visitor engagement including selling services and registration help.
  • Occasionally assist with the development of nature programs
  • Must have regular consistent and predictable attendance.
  • Follows and adheres to Park District policy and safety guidelines.
  • Attend staff meetings trainings and special events as scheduled by the Supervisory staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • 2 years previous experience working with volunteers preferred
  • 1 years of teaching/educational experience (part-time or full-time) in formal or informal setting with participants of various ages preferred
  • Must have knowledge or experience pertaining to local ecology natural history gardening and/or landscaping and plant identification
  • Must be comfortable using cutting equipment such as hand saws chainsaws and other maintenance equipment
  • Exhibit problem-solving abilities adaptability safety awareness good judgement problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn
  • Possess good communication skills and ability to work cooperatively with co-workers and the general public
  • Knowledge of Microsofts office suite
  • Valid Illinois drivers license
  • Must possess and maintain a license in pesticide application within 90 days of employment (provided by the Park District).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR/AED certification within 90 days of employment (provided by the Park District).
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Work is often performed in an outdoor setting. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions including precipitation poison ivy and stinging or biting insects. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand walk use hands to finger handle or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee may be frequently required to climb or balance and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. Employee may be required to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to communicate and exchange accurate information.
