Job Summary:TheDistrict Security & Emergency Preparedness Specialist position is responsible for implementing and leading the districts safety security and emergency preparedness programs across all school sites. The position serves as the districts lead for emergency preparedness planning training and compliance while also providing direct security response and operational support to ensure a safe and secure environment for students staff and visitors. .

Emergency Preparedness Lead Responsibilities
Develops assesses and maintains emergency preparedness plans procedures and protocols for all district sites including emergency reunification lockdown shelter-in-place fire and earthquake response.
Serves as the District lead for mandated emergency drills; tracks and reports implementation creates post-drill protocols for building coordinators and identifies sites needing additional training and support.
Establishes and maintains district-wide minimum standards for emergency preparedness training and aligns resources to district safety goals.
Administers surveys and assessments to evaluate the current level of emergency preparedness readiness across the district and communicates findings and recommended actions to building administrators.
Manages Crisis Response Box readiness; establishes baseline equipment inventory standards per site assists sites with inventory documentation and maintains schedules for inventory refresh.
Monitors and assesses the viability of emergency storage containers and supplies across all sites.
Works with community partners including local emergency management agencies to ensure equitable emergency preparedness resources across district sites.
Provides and coordinates emergency preparedness and safety training for district personnel and building sites.
Security Response Core Responsibilities
Responds to calls from school administration regarding safety and security concerns; provides direct assistance to assigned schools for security-related issues or dispatches appropriate staff.
Works collaboratively with local law enforcement and fire services to ensure the safety of campuses students and staff.
Conducts proactive and requested security patrols; confronts trespassers as necessary and assists law enforcement in identifying individuals committing or suspected of committing crimes on or near school property.
Assists school administrators with interviews of non-students to gather information on potential problems or district policy violations; supports enforcement of district rules and regulations.
Operates video surveillance access control intrusion detection and fire alarm systems; responds to alarms and performs testing and troubleshooting of safety systems.
Provides direction to staff and students during critical incidents or changes in building status (e.g. lockdown safe inside).
Creates and maintains security reports including a daily log of incidents and alarms; collects and logs evidence; supports schools in completing incident reports.
Assists with building playground and workplace safety inspections to identify and mitigate risks and vulnerabilities.
Conducts disposal of hazardous materials; maintains records of hazardous waste handling storage and disposal in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Reporting Relationships:Reports to the Director of Safety and Security.
Working Conditions:Required to be accessible during off hours and return to work for emergencies; required to be on call 24 hours a day during assigned periods. Situations require constant awareness of and attention to personal safety. Required to stand for prolonged periods and work outdoors in inclement weather. Must remain flexible and exercise sound judgment when dealing with potentially volatile situations. May be required to physically restrain students or adults. Requires visual concentration and physical dexterity. Must be able to handle potentially dangerous chemicals asbestos and other hazardous waste including arranging storage and removal. Some assignments may extend beyond the standard eight (8) hour workday. Work is conducted at the District Administrative Center and at various district school sites.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent; an associates degree or coursework in emergency management criminal justice or a closely related field is preferred.
A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a security officer emergency management professional or in a closely related law enforcement or public safety field.
Experience developing and delivering training programs in a K12 or public agency setting preferred.
Experience working with diverse racial ethnic and cultural groups preferred.
Allowable Substitution
Alternative combinations of training and experience may be evaluated by Human Resources for allowable substitution.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of school safety security and emergency preparedness practices procedures and applicable Washington State laws and regulations.
Knowledge of fire and intrusion alarm systems video surveillance and access control technology.
Knowledge of hazardous waste handling storage and disposal regulations.
Knowledge of emergency management frameworks (e.g. ICS/NIMS) and reunification protocols.
Skill in self-defense first aid and CPR.
Skill in developing delivering and evaluating staff training programs.
Skill in monitoring security systems and identifying potential safety breaches.
Ability to assess and prioritize emergency situations and make sound independent judgments with minimal supervision.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with staff students families the public and law enforcement.
Ability to de-escalate potentially dangerous situations and maintain calm under pressure.
Ability to operate a computer and proficiently use relevant software programs and two-way radio equipment.
Ability to accurately document activities incidents and occurrences.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse school community.
Licenses/Special Requirements
Valid Washington State Drivers License.
Valid First Aid and CPR certificates.
Sufficient physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Current accreditation for hazardous waste handling and removal preferred.
Salary:2026-27 Non-Represented (NNRAP) Professional/Technical Salary Schedule;Level V; placement on the salary schedule will be determined by Human Resources DOE. FLSA: Non-Exempt.
Work Year: 12 month position 260 days per year 8.0 hours per day.
Benefits: Washington state health insurance coverage (SEBB) and a Washington state retirement package for eligible positions. Generally you are eligible for SEBB benefits if you are anticipated to work at least 630 hours per school year (September 1 through August 31).
