The Advanced Technician/Mechanic is responsible for performing complex diagnostics maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment to manufacturer and company standards. This role requires in-depth technical expertise problem-solving skills and the ability to mentor and support junior technicians. The Advanced Technician ensures quality workmanship safety compliance and efficient workflow within the service department while maintaining strong communication with service advisors customers and team members.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Education:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of advanced vocational technical or trade school training in automotive diesel or heavy equipment technology preferred.
  1. Experience:
  • Minimum of 2- 5 years of progressive hands-on experience in vehicle diagnostics maintenance and complex repairs in a dealership commercial fleet or heavy-duty service environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring or training junior technicians is preferred.
  1. Licenses/Certifications:
  • Valid drivers license required.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician certification or equivalent preferred.
  • OEM-specific certifications (e.g. Diesel Engines) preferred.
  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or ability to obtain one is preferred.
  1. Technical Proficiency:
  • Advanced diagnostic skills with proficiency in using electronic diagnostic tools and manufacturer software.
  • Strong ability to interpret complex wiring diagrams technical bulletins and repair manuals.
  1. Other Requirements:
  • Ability to work independently and provide technical leadership to others.
  • Must meet the physical demands of the job including lifting heavy parts and working in confined spaces.
  • Flexibility to work overtime weekends or on-call as required.

Essential Functions:

  1. Oversee Daily Shop Operations and Workflow
  • Review incoming repair orders to assess workload priority and technician skill alignment.
  • Assign jobs to technicians based on capabilities availability and urgency.
  • Monitor repair progress throughout the day and make adjustments to maintain productivity and meet promise times.
  • Coordinate workflow between service advisors parts department and technicians to ensure efficient shop operations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for technical escalations and complex repair situations.
  1. Provide Advanced Diagnostics and Technical Expertise
  • Perform highlevel diagnostics on the most difficult unusual or escalated repairs.
  • Verify diagnostic conclusions of junior or midlevel technicians when additional confirmation is needed.
  • Guide technicians through advanced troubleshooting procedures and ensure accurate rootcause analysis.
  • Maintain mastery of manufacturer systems service procedures and technical updates.
  1. Ensure Quality Control and Repair Accuracy
  • Conduct final inspections on repairs requiring seniorlevel oversight.
  • Verify that completed work meets manufacturer safety and company standards.
  • Review repair documentation and confirm completeness accuracy and compliance.
  • Test drive vehicles postrepair to ensure safe and proper operation when required.
  • Identify recurring repair issues and collaborate with service management to address underlying causes.
  1. Support and Develop Technicians
  • Mentor train and support apprentice junior and intermediate technicians.
  • Demonstrate proper diagnostic methods repair techniques and use of specialty tools.
  • Provide constructive feedback on performance quality and efficiency.
  • Assist in onboarding new technicians and guiding them through shop expectations and processes.
  • Promote a learning environment by sharing technical knowledge and best practices.
  1. Coordinate with Service Advisors and Parts Department
  • Communicate clearly with service advisors regarding repair status additional findings and required approvals.
  • Work directly with parts personnel to identify needed components resolve parts delays and support accurate parts sourcing.
  • Provide accurate labor times and technical explanations to support estimate creation and customer communication.
  • Help service advisors understand complex repair needs so they can relay information accurately to customers.
  1. Maintain Safety Cleanliness and Regulatory Compliance
  • Model and enforce safe work practices and adherence to OSHA DOT and shop safety standards.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections of equipment lifts and work areas.
  • Ensure technicians follow proper procedures for hazardous materials waste disposal and environmental compliance.
  • Promote a clean organized and hazardfree shop environment.
  1. Perform Advanced and Complex Repairs
  • Carry out the most technically demanding vehicle repairs overhauls and diagnostic procedures.
  • Adapt repair strategies when unexpected issues or deviations arise.
  • Maintain precision and attention to detail while working on critical vehicle systems (engine aftertreatment electrical hydraulic etc.).
  • Ensure all tools diagnostic equipment and specialty items are maintained and functioning properly.
  1. Support Documentation and Communication Standards
  • Review and validate technician repair documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Document own diagnostic tests repair steps parts used and findings in detail.
  • Communicate clearly with service management regarding shop performance training needs and process improvements.
  • Assist in tracking open repair orders and ensuring timely job closeout.
  1. Maintain High Professional Standards and Team Leadership
  • Model professionalism integrity and accountability for the entire shop.
  • Support a positive workplace culture built on teamwork respect and continuous improvement.
  • Participate in shop meetings technical discussions and ongoing training opportunities.
  • Maintain confidentiality and represent the companys values in all customer and internal interactions.
  1. Meet Physical and Technical Requirements of the Role
  • Perform physically demanding tasks including lifting heavy components working in confined spaces and standing for extended periods.
  • Maintain physical ability to safely operate equipment tools and vehicles.
  • Keep pace with rapidly changing technology diagnostic tools and manufacturer systems.
