JOB SUMMARY

A custodian at the San Antonio Childrens Museum is unique it involves not only janitorial duties but also serving as an ambassador of the museum by engaging the public when needed while working in public areas. Reporting to the Custodian Supervisor (Day) this is a part-time hourly non-exempt position which will be paid based on the hours worked.

Weekend availability (Saturday and Sunday) is required.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cleans museum galleries public areas restrooms administrative offices and storage areas.
  • Serves as attendant during programs and rental events.
  • Prepares all set ups with tables chairs and tablecloths as directed by set up diagram
  • Assists with break down cleaning and striking museum programs and events.
  • Sweeps/mops/waxes floors and operates other cleaning equipment as needed.
  • Performs proper techniques of floor care and preparation of areas to be cleaned buffed stripped or wax as well as carpet cleaning.
  • Must be able to operate and maintain all floor cleaning/finishing equipment to include but not limited to floor buffer/burnishes water extraction machine and carpet cleaning equipment.
  • Assists in ordering supplies for custodial activities.
  • Monitors condition of cleaning equipment and ensure that it is properly maintained and stored.
  • Engages the public when needed while working in gallery areas or if asked for information.
  • Ensures work is performed safely according to the museums policies and guidelines.
  • Works as a member of a dynamic team that fosters interdepartmental communication and relationships.

  • Projects a positive attitude toward the organization and co-workers. Model and ensure that actions appearanceattitude and attendance are at a level suitable for the organization.
  • Serves as a positive and dynamic team player and leaderoutwardly and obviously friendlyto foster intra- andinterdepartmental work and relationships.
  • Attends all training assigned and pertaining to the position and adheres to standards and practices established in The DoSeum policies protocols and standard operating guidelines.
  • Serves as a representative of The DoSeum
  • Travels locally as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as required or requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of 1 year of hands-on experience in custodial services
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment and supplies needed for projects.
  • Ability to communicate with staff volunteers visitors and vendors.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule which may include mornings days evenings holidays and weekends for events.
  • Ability to communicate in English as required for daily shifts and preferred for evening shifts.
  • Ability to use a two-way radio.
  • Access to reliable transportation to work which is located north of downtown San Antonio.

  • Flexible working hours; may require working weekends early mornings days evenings and holidays.
  • Variable exposure to noise weather and elements.
  • Constant working with the public and employees.
  • Regularly required periods of physical activity including frequent stooping bending climbing ladders operating valves lifting at least 50 lbs. and pushing 75 lbs. with the assistance of a cart.
  • Must be able to sit stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds unassisted
  • Ability to work on tall ladders and lifts at varying heights.
  • Interacts with children and guests in a positive manner.
