Range Explanation:

  • Hiring Range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors including your skills qualifications experience education licenses training and internal equity.

  • Pay Range is the entire compensation range for the position.

The Corrections Cook II is responsible for leading participating training and overseeing jail trustees or juvenile detainees assigned to the food service section of a correctional is distinguished from the Corrections Cook I classification which is responsible for the preparation of meals and volume cooking in a correctional is further distinguished from the Corrections Food Service Manager classification which is responsible for planning organizing and supervising the preparation and serving of food in a correctional institution.

Essential Functions:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act this classification may include any of the following tasks knowledge skills and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the departments need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Assigns work to cooks jail trustees or juvenile detention detainees;

  • Oversees the preparation of regular and special diet foods according to prescribed menus and recipes;

  • Inventories food and supply items and recommends quantities to be ordered;

  • Contacts vendors daily to place orders for contracted food and supply items;

  • Inspects food handling and storage procedures to ensure compliance with sanitation standards;

  • Inventories knives cleavers and other utensils stored in the locked cabinets are the end of each shift;

  • Ensures that meals are prepared on schedule;

  • Supervises all food service activities on an assigned shift;

  • Checks kitchen area for contraband and weapons;

  • Counsels jail trustees and detainees to avoid problems in the work area;

  • Inspects cooks jail trustees or juvenile detention detainees reporting for duty to assure personal hygiene and proper attire.

Minimum Qualifications:

Three (3) years of progressively responsible skilled experience in large-scale institutional food preparation AND two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience (which may be concurrent with other required experience).

(Large-scale food preparation includes food preparation in an institutional setting e.g. hospital nursing home corrections/detention facilities school or industrial plant cafeterias large full-service and fast-food restaurants commercial cafeterias/buffets hotel/convention banquet facilities military feeding facilities (ashore or afloat) or similar mass-feeding or catering operations.)

OR:

Two (2) years with Pima County as a Corrections Cook I.

Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

License and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application.ValidAZdriver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicants suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain / maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination.

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history education and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. All positions require satisfactory completion of a background investigation due to need for access to law enforcement corrections or courts facilities property communication systems and associated confidential and sensitive information documents databases and evidentiary materials. Pre-/post-appointment drug screening and polygraph examinations are required of all positions in this classification due to need for access as described above. U.S. Department of Labor Regulation CFR 1910.1030 requires notification that some positions in this classification may have a high or moderate risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens or infectious diseases due to contact with the public evidence detainees and/or inmates. Any required immunizations personal safety and protective equipment and training will be provided. Some positions may require bi-lingual abilities in English and a second language as determined by the department. This position will require apost-job offer physicaland/or drug screen. This position will require post-job offer proof of immunization(s) or immunization(s) and/or a TB screening.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: Some positions within this classification may require the ability to react to physical confrontations and emergency situations quickly and effectively; work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time; hear and understand speech and radio transmissions. Frequently required to lift push or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Working conditions will be determined by position. Action Activity - bending reaching squatting stooping; Motion Activity - grapsing and fine movement; Hearing Activity - in noisy areas on a radio behind themselves equipment alarms; Speaking Activity - operate a motor vehicle distinguish colors depth perception peripheral vision.
