Description of Work

This Correctional Officer I position works as a canine handler and is assigned to the Security Accountability Section.

The position is assigned to the Western cases of emergencies that may occur outside of the Western Region the canine handler may be required to respond.

The canine handler responds to emergencies searches for escaped offenders.
The canine handler will be responsible for the training and utilization of all canines.
The canine handler will be responsible for the well-being of canines assigned to him/her including the cleanliness of the canines and the kennels.
The canine handler is responsible for the daily care and feeding of the canines ensuring appropriate medical care and maintaining a record of the canines medical history.
The canine handler will be responsible for the proper care and maintenance of an assigned vehicle and equipment.
The canine handler must participate in annual in-service training and any specialized training required for handler/canine certification.
This canine handler may be required to coordinate and work with special teams and their missions.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade Range: $37621.00 - $48953.00

The Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Expertise working with the overall operation of correctional facilities.
  • Proven experience using various policies procedures rules and regulations associated with the control and management of offenders.
  • Expertise working with emergency preparedness and knowledge of special teams.
  • Demonstrated skills in the use and care of firearms.

Management Preference:

  • Previous K9 handling experience is preferred but not required.
