It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention protection and preparation as well as the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This position is located at Pamlico Correctional Institution in Bayboro NC. This

is a medium custody facility housing approximately 575 male offenders. Reporting to a Correctional Programs

Supervisor this position is responsible for carrying a caseload of offenders which involves supportive

counseling conducting assessments developing case plans answering and following up on offender

questions and problems.

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:


  • Providing recommendations to the classification committee.
  • Assisting in coordinating major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders such as offender work assignments work release education or recreation.
  • Planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.
  • Documented knowledge of supportive counseling techniques.

This is a certified position and employees may be subject to assist in any certified capacity as needed which

includes Custody and Administrative Services. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associates degree in Criminal Justice Human Services Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
