Job Summary
- These positions are full-time 40-hours per week and are located at Bridgeport Correctional Center Hartford Correctional Center and New Haven Correctional Center.
- Openings are available on first second and third shift (to be determined by the needs of the Agency.) These positions work on a 5x2 Monday-Friday schedule.
- This class supervises a large staff of correctional personnel engaged in custody and security operations.
- Correctional Captain responsibilities include:
- Assumes delegated responsibility for custody and security of assigned inmates buildings grounds and operations;
- Schedules assigns oversees and reviews work of staff;
- Coordinates plans and manages training activities;
- Ensures consistent enforcement of policies and procedures;
- Acts as liaison with other operating units agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures.
In order to be considered for this job opening you must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service absent any applicable collective bargaining language and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening. In the Department of Correction this class is accountable for supervising correctional staff engaged in custody security investigations/operations inmate transportation and/or developing coordinating and conducting training programs.
- Assumes delegated responsibility for custody and security of assigned inmates buildings grounds and operations;
- Schedules assigns oversees and reviews work of staff;
- Coordinates plans and manages training activities;
- Provides staff training and assistance;
- Conducts performance evaluations;
- Determines priorities and plans shift and/or unit work;
- Establishes and maintains operating and/or training procedures;
- Develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards;
- Ensures consistent enforcement of policies and procedures;
- Inspects posts frequently to ensure adequate staffing;
- Performs the most sensitive security investigations and ensures accuracy of staff investigations throughout the State correctional system;
- Conducts training either within a correctional facility or oversees staff in performing training activities;
- Maintains discipline among employees and inmates;
- Supervises inmate count; supervises major facility group activities (i.e. meals off site work);
- Acts as liaison with other operating units agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;
- Administers pertinent laws regulations and posts orders;
- Maintains contact with individuals both within and outside agency who might have impact on program activities;
- Reviews and prepares reports and correspondence;
- Maintains records;
- Participates in crisis intervention as needed;
- May assist in preparation of budget;
- May counsel inmates;
- May participate in disciplinary hearings;
- May physically restrain inmates quell disturbances and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies;
- Performs related duties as required.

College training in behavioral sciences corrections criminal justice or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of one (1) year.
- Experience enforcing and ensuring compliance with Administrative Directives and facility post orders
- Experience exercising independent judgment and making sound correctional decisions having significant operational impact
- Experience managing facility operations during emergencies and critical incidents
- Experience managing staff including:
- Addressing performance issues and staff deficiencies
- Coaching and mentoring
- Providing training and staff development opportunities
- Experience analyzing operational data to address security concerns writing reports performing compliance reviews and providing accurate information for facility audits
- Experiencing reviewing and drafting updates to facility policies and procedures
- Experience managing inmate population and housing issues monitor conditions of confinement ensure compliance with Administrative Directives and facility polices and address inmate issues
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operators license.

- Incumbents in this class must have general good health be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength stamina agility endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
