Job Summary

High Point University is seeking a full-time Director of Fitness to oversee the development administration and coordination of campus fitness and wellness initiatives. This role manages the daily operations of the Slane Fitness Center supervises group fitness and personal training programs and oversees the functionality and scheduling of fitness facilities to support the student population.

The Director is responsible for recruiting training scheduling and directly supervising a student staff of more than 60 employees across group fitness personal training guest services and fitness maintenance. Additional responsibilities include designing and implementing staff orientation assisting with the hiring and development of recreation staff managing virtual and off-site fitness programming and coordinating schedules for fitness classes guest services and facility maintenance to ensure efficient operations and a high-quality campus recreation experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Bachelors degree in exercise science or related field (required)
  • Masters degree in exercise science or related field (preferred)

Experience and Training

  • Experience with college recreation program personal training and group exercise/instruction
  • American Red Cross CPR and AED certification
  • Personal training certification preferred

Knowledge Skills Ability:

Program Leadership & Administration
  • Oversees the daily operation development administration and coordination of campus fitness wellness and nutrition programs facilities and services for High Point University students.
  • Coordinates implements evaluates and promotes fitness wellness and nutrition programming based on ongoing assessment of student needs and interests.
  • Oversees Group Exercise Personal Training virtual fitness outdoor fitness and other off-site wellness programming.
  • Manages group fitness class registration online reservations and programming schedules ensuring timely updates to reflect operational changes.
  • Maintains and updates online platforms forms and scheduling systems related to fitness programming and personal training.
  • Continuously evaluates and enhances programs services and procedures to improve the student experience and align with emerging wellness trends.

Facility Operations & Risk Management
  • Manages the day-to-day operations functionality scheduling and utilization of the Slane Fitness Center and other fitness facilities.
  • Monitors and inspects fitness and pool areas to ensure a safe environment and compliance with University policies and risk management standards.
  • Collaborates with the Director and contracted vendors to maintain fitness and aquatic equipment and coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations to protect the health and safety of students staff and visitors.
  • Recommends improvements to departmental policies operating procedures workflow processes safety practices and equipment purchasing storage and utilization.
  • Develops recommendations for facility enhancements and expansion to better serve the Universitys recreation and wellness needs.

Staff Leadership & Student Development
  • Recruits hires trains supervises schedules evaluates disciplines and when necessary terminates a student staff of more than 60 employees including Group Fitness Instructors Personal Trainers Guest Services Staff and Fitness Maintenance Staff.
  • Ensures all student employees meet University employment eligibility requirements.
  • Designs implements and leads comprehensive staff orientation and ongoing professional development including a week-long student staff orientation prior to the fall semester.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings and performance evaluations to reinforce policies procedures customer service expectations and professional growth.
  • Oversees the quality effectiveness and continued development of the Personal Training program and staff.
  • Promotes the holistic development leadership skills and professional success of student employees in alignment with the Universitys mission and values.

Budget Assessment & Strategic Planning
  • Develops and manages the fitness and wellness programming budget and assists with budget analysis and resource planning.
  • Creates surveys analyzes program outcomes and assesses facility usage to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Invests in ongoing professional development through certifications conferences and collaboration with campus and professional organizations.
  • Maintains all required professional certifications and credentials.

Marketing Events & Campus Engagement
  • Assists with the marketing and promotion of Recreation Services programs through the department website social media and other communication channels.
  • Assists in planning and executing special events student orientations and campus wellness initiatives.
  • Supervises Recreation Services operations in the Directors absence.
  • Provides operational support across Recreation Services programs including Outdoor Discovery intramural sports challenge course programming team-building initiatives laser tag events and recreational excursion trips as needed.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with students parents faculty staff and community partners while delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Supervises part-time personal training group fitness lifeguard fitness maintenance ice rink and guest services employees.
  • Manages the operations of the group exercise and personal training programs.
  • Manages wellness and nutritional programming.
  • Promotes student health.
  • Maintains all professional certifications.
  • Ensures student safety in the use of the Universitys recreational and fitness facilities.
