Job Summary
Position Summary
The HVAC Service Technician is responsible for performing maintenance diagnostics and repairs on a variety of HVAC systems ensuring that all work is completed safely efficiently and to the highest standard of quality. This master job description covers all service technician levels (13) and serves as the foundation for the Service Technician Level Matrix which defines scope independence and capabilities for each level.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance diagnostics and repair of HVAC systems including RTUs split systems VRF boilers and chillers.
- Conduct system start-ups commissioning and basic to advanced troubleshooting.
- Follow company and industry safety protocols at all times.
- Accurately log work performed in Service Fusion software.
- Participate in daily safety meetings and huddles.
- Maintain assigned tools equipment and service vehicle.
- Provide professional customer interaction explaining findings and recommended solutions.
- Support team through peer-to-peer learning.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Complete all required documentation including timecards work orders and material usage.
Position Levels
The Service Technician position is structured into three levels based on technical proficiency independence and leadership capability. All Service Technician levels perform mechanical service work as outlined above; level distinctions define the complexity of work performed degree of supervision required and leadership responsibilities.
Service Technician 1 (ST1)
Entry-level technician focused on learning HVAC service fundamentals safety procedures basic maintenance tasks and documentation standards. Works under close supervision and supports senior technicians.
Service Technician 2 (ST2)
Fully competent service technician capable of performing standard maintenance diagnostics and repairs independently. Demonstrates reliable troubleshooting ability strong documentation habits and professional customer interaction.
Service Technician 3 (ST3)
Advanced service technician with strong diagnostic skills and minimal supervision requirements. Handles complex service calls supports mentoring of junior technicians and assists the Senior Service Technician as needed.
Progression between levels is governed by the Service Technician Level Matrix not tenure alone.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid drivers license and clean driving record.
- Ability to lift 5075 lbs and work in various environmental conditions.
- Willingness to work at heights in confined spaces and in varied weather.
- EPA Section 608 Certification (Type II or Universal preferred for Levels 23).
- Ability to follow safety procedures and company protocols.
- Strong work ethic punctuality and communication skills.
