Job Summary
OVERVIEW
Under the direction of the Foreman the Concrete Setter performs skilled concrete form setting site preparation and finishing work in support of new construction expansion and repair projects at Derrels Mini Storage facilities. This position builds and sets forms to blueprint and grade specifications places reinforcement and pours and finishes concrete pads drives curbs and other flatwork to required slope ADA and structural tolerances while operating tools and equipment safely and in compliance with company policy and Cal/OSHA regulations. Work is performed outdoors year-round as part of a construction crew with travel to job sites throughout the Central Valley.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Construct set and brace wooden or metal forms based on blueprints and grade requirements; strip clean and maintain forms after each pour.
- Excavate grade and compact soil or gravel to prepare the base; verify elevations and grades using a grade laser.
- Place tie and secure reinforcing steel (rebar) or wire mesh grids prior to the pour.
- Guide and spread concrete; use screeds floats edgers and power trowels to smooth texture and finish surfaces; apply curing compounds and cut control/expansion joints as required.
- Use a grade laser and safely handle tools including air hammers earth tampers concrete mixers saws and measuring equipment; operate skid steer and skip loader with box scraper to grade pads and drives.
- Ensure all work meets specified slope ADA and structural tolerances; verify measurements and elevations before and after pours.
- Follow all Cal/OSHA and company safety requirements including respirable crystalline silica exposure controls (wet cutting/dust collection) heat illness prevention procedures proper PPE usage safe lifting techniques and verification of underground utility markings (USA North 811) prior to excavation.
- Load secure and transport tools forms and materials between job sites; maintain a clean organized and safe work area.
- Travel to company facilities and job sites throughout the Central Valley as assigned.
- Work overtime as needed including occasional weekend work based on business needs.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures safety requirements and applicable federal state and local laws.
- Perform any other related duties as designated by the supervisor or management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum two (2) years of prior concrete or construction experience.
- Valid drivers license (Class C).
- Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints drawings and grades; perform construction math including measurements fractions and slope calculations.
- Skilled and safe operation of grade lasers air hammers earth tampers concrete mixers saws and measuring equipment; ability to operate a skid steer and skip loader with box scraper.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting (up to 75100 lbs.) bend stoop and stand for long periods.
- Ability to work the posted schedule including overtime and occasional weekend work as business needs require.
- Deep understanding of OSHA regulations proper PPE usage and safe lifting techniques.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Working knowledge of concrete mix behavior placement curing and finishing techniques; form systems and grade-setting methods; ADA slope and cross-slope tolerances; and OSHA/Cal/OSHA construction safety standards including respirable crystalline silica and heat illness prevention requirements.
- OSHA 10/30 construction safety certification is a plus.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

- Lift and carry up to 100 lbs. occasionally and up to 50 lbs. frequently; push/pull loaded wheelbarrows screeds and equipment.
- Stand and walk for the majority of the shift including on uneven or slippery surfaces.
- Frequent bending stooping kneeling squatting twisting and reaching; work at ground level for extended periods during finishing.
- Repetitive hand and arm motion; gripping and handling of tools and materials throughout the shift.
- Climb in and out of equipment and excavations.
- Sufficient vision (natural or corrected) depth perception and hearing to work safely around moving equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an outdoor construction environment year-round in Central Valley CA conditions including extreme heat (100F) and cold with exposure to dust (including respirable crystalline silica) noise vibration wet/caustic concrete form release agents and other chemicals moving machinery and equipment and uneven slippery or muddy surfaces. Equipment used includes a grade laser; air hammers; earth tampers/plate compactors; concrete mixers; concrete and masonry saws; screeds floats edgers and power trowels; skid steer; skip loader with box scraper; hand and power tools; measuring equipment; company vehicles; and required personal protective equipment (safety glasses gloves hard hat hearing protection high-visibility clothing rubber boots and respiratory protection as required).
COMPENSATION AND CLASSIFICATION
This is a full-time non-exempt hourly position eligible for overtime in accordance with California law. Meal and rest periods are provided in accordance with California law. Benefit eligibility is determined by hours worked and company policy.
