Job Summary

Position Function:

Provides consultation and referral services for the Animal Health Center.

Salary Grade:14

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Coordinates and directs all activities relating to referring and consulting veterinarians.
2. Serves as initial contact point for veterinarians that call for consultation or referral services regarding diagnosis and treatment of patients.
3. Answers or directs veterinary protocol questions.
4. Handles a heavy volume of lengthy phone calls to determine specific medical services including consulting requests with appropriate clinicians.
5. Determines the appropriate hospital faculty or staff member for each consultation request or referral appointment and follows up to ensure communication has been made.
6. Assists in follow-up communications with referral veterinarians.
7. Facilitates communications and follows up with owners of patients as appropriate.
8. Reviews hospital communications in order to recommend and coordinate improvements needed. Evaluates improvements in methods to communicate with referring veterinarians and makes recommendations as appropriate.
9. Promotes professional relations between hospital staff and veterinarians and referring or consulting veterinarians.
10. Identifies situations in which a complaint from a referring veterinarian has arisen or potentially might arise and independently initiates steps to mitigate any negative outcomes for the hospital or staff.
11. Provides information to referring veterinarians regarding policies and procedures.
12. Contacts referring veterinarians as necessary from the point of admission to
post-discharge.
13. Facilitates special case scenarios and critical events to ensure that all services applicable are contacted information is retrieved and forwarded to the referring veterinarian. Determines proper hospital staff to address questions of a complex technical or sensitive nature.
14. Compiles updates and distributes referral information and the CVM website.
15. Develops new procedures systems and methods to improve efficiency of operation.
16. Manages the veterinary referral database.
17. Supervises all admissions staff and admissions area and fills in when short staffed.
18. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Veterinary Technology or Bachelors Degree in a related field.
2. Minimum of one year of previous related work experience with considerable job knowledge cf clinical veterinary services terminology surgical procedures and veterinary hospital procedures.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of federal state and University regulations protocols and/or procedures.
2. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and In writing.
3. Must have excellent telephone and interpersonal skills.
4. Must have the ability to multi-task and exercise significant individual initiative independent
judgement and discretion in Interactions with hospital staff referring veterinarians and patient owners.
5. Ability to develop plan and implement short- and long-range goals
6. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications
7. Competencies include a positive approach to work teamwork leadership end a commitment to public service.
8. Must have the ability to work well with and produce positive results with a wide range of
constituency groups.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
2. Frequent - Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond ones control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; Irregular hours may be required; meeting of deadlines and coordination of related activities are key to the position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis
3. Job frequently requires walking sitting reaching talking hearing handling objects with hands
4. Job requires standing stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling and lifting up to 10 pounds
