Job Summary

Sign language interpreters facilitate the communication and integration of deaf and hearing impaired or otherwise disabled students and consumers (including faculty staff and university guests) into the classroom other instructional settings and into the university community either by way of American Sign language (ASL) or Signed English Transliteration (a manual oral or tactile system of communication.)

Key Responsibilities

• Sign language interpreters provide communication access by conveying verbal information into a mode of communication best understood by the deaf hearing impaired and/or otherwise disabled students faculty staff and university guests. Work with students in the Interpreting program viewing their performance and providing feedback.

Time Base/Duration of Appointment

Hourly/intermittent on call temporary position. Successful candidates may be appointed for a few days and up to one (1) year depending on the assignment. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education experience and qualifications the candidate brings to the position internal equity and the hiring departments fiscal resources.

The salary range for this classification is $55 to $70 per hour.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate demonstrates the ability to adapt to a wide range of interpreting needs and possesses a high degree of linguistic cognitive and technical proficiency. They have a strong understanding of Deaf Culture and are skilled in working across the full spectrum of sign modalities from American Sign Language (ASL) to Signed English. The candidate exhibits exceptional attention to detail and accuracy outstanding listening skills and a thorough command of English grammar vocabulary and punctuation. They possess strong receptive and expressive communication abilities accurately conveying the speakers message intent tone register and content between languages. The ideal candidate exercises sound professional judgment when accepting assignments based on skill level subject matter familiarity and the diversity of consumers and settings. They work effectively with consumers while adhering to industry-specific Codes of Ethics Standards of Professional Practice and confidentiality requirements. Additionally they build and maintain positive professional relationships with students faculty staff campus officials and guests across classroom settings campus events and other functions. The candidate communicates diplomatically and effectively with colleagues and stakeholders collaborates closely as part of a team and fosters cooperative working relationships through a positive respectful attitude. They consistently demonstrate reliability by reporting to work on time prepared to perform all assigned duties and possess a strong working knowledge of standard workplace practices.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies procedures and guidelines including but not limited to safety civility information security and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the universitys commitment to a vision of excellence.

Education and Experience

Sign language interpreters are required to complete an Interpreter Training Program (ITP).

Licenses / Certificates

Interpreters by their profession are required to work towards and seek various levels of professional certification that is recognized on a state and national level. These certifications are:

1. National Interpreter Certification (NIC).

2. Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID): CICTCI&CT.

3. National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Certificates: NAD III NAD IV NAD V.
