Civil Roadway Design Intern
Job Summary
As a Civil Roadway Design Intern at KPFF you will work alongside experienced engineers and technical staff on transportation infrastructure projects. You will gain hands-on experience with roadway design plan development engineering calculations and construction support while learning how design decisions respond to agency standards site conditions constructability and the needs of the traveling public.
Throughout the internship you will:
- Assist with roadway design tasks involving horizontal and vertical alignments roadway geometry grading drainage and related civil improvements.
- Help prepare plans profiles cross sections details quantity calculations and cost estimates under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Support development and organization of design files and technical deliverables using civil design and computer-aided drafting software.
- Learn to apply agency design criteria standards and project requirements to real-world transportation projects.
- Coordinate with drainage utility structures traffic survey environmental and other project disciplines.
- Contribute to team discussions quality-control reviews and collaborative problem-solving.
- Participate in our Weekly Intern Training Series and other mentoring opportunities.
Qualifications :
- Current enrollment in a Bachelors or Masters degree program in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
- Basic understanding of civil engineering fundamentals and an interest in roadway or transportation design.
- Ability to interpret basic survey information plans and technical documentation.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate coursework.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong technical organizational and problem-solving abilities with the ability to work collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completed or enrolled in coursework related to transportation engineering surveying hydrology hydraulics or civil design.
- Familiarity with Civil 3D MicroStation OpenRoads Designer AutoCAD or comparable design software.
- Previous internship research design-team or field experience related to civil or transportation engineering including experience with civil design and computer-aided drafting software is preferred Interest in pursuing a career in civil and transportation engineering.
Additional Information :
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Interns primarily work in a standard office setting with occasional travel to bridge and project sites.
- Field visits may involve walking standing kneeling climbing slopes or embankments and navigating uneven terrain.
- Must comply with all safety requirements in the office and on project sites.
Internship Duration
- The internship typically runs 10-12 weeks during the summer with full-time hours.
- Exact start and end dates may vary depending on the students availability.
