Job Summary
Chelan High School is seeking an enthusiastic organized and motivating Knowledge Bowl Advisor to coach and mentor our high school academic team. The Knowledge Bowl Advisor oversees all aspects of the program including student recruitment weekly practice sessions travel logistics and coaching teams during regional and state academic competitions.
Knowledge Bowl is an interscholastic academic competition where teams of students answer questions spanning history literature mathematics science current events popular culture and general trivia in both written and fast-paced oral rounds.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership & Student Engagement
- Recruit select and organize student participants to form Varsity and Junior Varsity Knowledge Bowl teams.
- Foster an inclusive supportive and intellectually encouraging team environment.
- Instill sportsmanship teamwork effective buzzer strategies and critical thinking skills.
Program & Practice Management:
- Schedule and facilitate regular weekly practice sessions (typically held before or after school) throughout the competitive season.
- Develop practice materials trivia drills and mock oral/written competition rounds to prepare students for regional standards.
- Track individual and team performance to determine balanced competition rosters.
Competition & Logistics:
- Coordinate registration and logistics for regional meets within the North Central Educational Service District (NCESD / ESD 171) and potential state tournament appearances.
- Arrange transportation travel schedules meals and student permission forms in coordination with the CHS Activities Department.
- Chaperone and supervise students during all off-campus meets events and overnight trips (if applicable for state finals).
Administration & Communication:
- Maintain clear and timely communication with team members parents/guardians school administration and event organizers.
- Manage the program budget supplies and equipment (e.g. electronic lockout buzzer systems).
- Ensure all team members adhere to district academic eligibility requirements and student codes of conduct.
Qualifications & Competencies:
- Education & Credentials: High school diploma required; Bachelors degree or current Washington State Teaching Certificate preferred.
- Experience: Prior experience advising coaching teaching or participating in academic competitions (Knowledge Bowl Quiz Bowl Science Bowl) preferred.
- Knowledge: Broad general knowledge across academic disciplines and an enthusiasm for lifelong learning.
- Skills: Excellent organizational time-management and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to manage groups of high school students effectively.
- Clearances: Must pass a Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint background check prior to employment. First Aid/CPR certification required (or willingness to obtain).
Season & Time Commitment:
- Season Duration: Late autumn through early spring (typically November March).
- Competitions: Intermittent weekday afternoon/evening meets and full-day Saturday regional/state meets as scheduled by the league.
- Compensation: Stipend is $2475 for the season.
