Job Summary

Description

Position Objective: The Chemist will provide support chemistry services to satisfy theoverall operational objectives including operation and maintenance of Sirius Tasker systems for the processing and distribution of all internally synthesized compounds and working with Compound Management in the storage and management of internal compounds at National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides laboratory experience needed to assist in performing various chemical experiments and procedures.
  • Work with Compound Management in the storage and management of internal compounds 2
  • Utilizes and operates various complex laboratory machines and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain Sirius Tasker systems for the processing and distribution of all internally synthesized compounds 1
  • Perform general maintenance and upkeep on the Agilent LCMS instrumentation
  • Perform general maintenance and upkeep on the preparative purification system
  • Perform general maintenance and upkeep on the Waters UPLC instrumentation
  • Develop and maintain the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) platform which involves use and upkeep of the BioTools Chiral IR-2X VCD spectrometer.
  • Documents and analyzes results produces detailed summaries and reports.
  • Produce research reports and communicate results.
  • Responsible for maintaining data management of internally synthesized compounds
  • Analyzes organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical and physical properties composition structure relationships between compounds and reactions.
  • Adds heat light energy or a catalyst to show changes in composition.
  • Provides laboratory experience needed to perform various complex chemical experiments and procedures.
  • Coordinate the implementation of operational processes and workflow integration related to the Sirius Tasker systems
  • Prepares test solutions compounds and reagents and maintains necessary laboratory supplies.
  • Purify compounds submitted by chemists. 5
  • Schedules tracks and reports analyses of experiments and procedures.
  • Maintain computer database for various records.
  • Independently provides laboratory experience needed to perform various complex chemical experiments and procedures.
  • Purify compounds submitted by medicinal chemists using preparative chromatography 3
  • Designs and optimizes chemical experiments and procedures.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of NMR workflows utilizing the Sirius Tasker systems 4
  • Assist with the upgrade and expansion of the SMART laboratory information management system (LIMS).
  • Trains staff on new experiments and practices operations and maintenance of instruments and equipment safety practices etc.
  • Maintain and provide training to staff and trainees on scientific instrumentation including but not limited to HPLC/UPLC instruments VCD instrument Sirius Tasker systems analytical balances centrifuges spectrophotometers and vacuum apparatus.
  • Designs optimizes and troubleshoots chemical experiments and procedures.
  • Work with Sirius Automation Group developers to create novel workflows and instrument methods.
  • Manages overall maintenance of laboratory.
  • Monitor and report on all safety issues.
  • Provides scientific expertise needed in order to function as the senior chemist of a large laboratory.
  • Provide knowledge and recommendations for various committees and working groups
  • Maintains operates and calibrates numerous machines for use in various experiments and procedures.
  • Maintain and provide updates on laboratory stockroom and equipment maintenance.
  • Assesses methods and procedures for use in experiments and makes modifications and improvements to resolve problems and meet specific needs.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of NMR workflows utilizing the Sirius Tasker systems.
  • Maintains accurate detailed records of experiments and evaluates and interprets results for validity and scientific meaning.
  • Register internally synthesized compounds within the NCATS registration system as needed.
  • Maintain and provide updates on laboratory stockroom and equipment maintenance.
  • Works with staff to prepare laboratory findings for publication and presentation at meetings.
  • Prepare and present results and findings at internal and external meetings and conferences
  • Work products and documents related to operating and maintaining Sirius Taskers systems for the processing and distribution of all internally synthesized compounds; operational processes and workflow integration of Sirius Tasker systems.
  • Work products and documents related to maintaining data management of internally synthesized compounds; work with Compound Management in the storage and management of internal compounds.
  • Work products and documents related to purifying compounds submitted by medicinal chemists using preparative chromatography.
  • Work products and documents related to performing general maintenance and upkeep on
  • Agilent LCMS instrumentation Waters UPLC-MS instrumentation and preparative purification systems.
  • Work products and documents related to in-house compound tracking system; analytical data entry and management; instrument integration and automation.
  • -Work products and documents related to maintaining and performing light training on scientific instrumentation including HPLC/UPLC instruments VCD instrument Sirius Tasker systems analytical balances centrifuges spectrophotometers and vacuum apparatus.

  • Work products and documents related to developing and documenting new procedures; maintaining and providing updates on laboratory stockroom and equipment maintenance; membership on various committees and workgroups.


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in chemistry or other related field or equivalent
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Chemistry or a related field
  • Experience in a laboratory that carries out chemical research and experience with safety issues associated with chemistry laboratories
  • Knowledge of analytical data management laboratory information management systems instrument integration and automation
  • Skilled in compilation of experimental data and statistical analysis
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Data mgmt sw packages db mgmt SiriusSlate ChemDraw PerkinElmer ELN ChemStation MassHunter MassLynx Trilution LC BioTools ComputeVOA/CompareVO LIMS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with non-technical and technical staff
  • Excellent analytical interpersonal organizational and time management skills
  • Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
