Job Summary
- Position Description
Under general supervision the Carpenter is responsible for skilled carpentry work in the construction maintenance and repair of department facilities. This role requires precision creativity and the ability to work on projects ranging from custom cabinetry to structural frameworks. The Carpenter will collaborate with team members to meet project specifications and deadlines while ensuring quality craftsmanship and adherence to safety standards
Duties & Responsibilities:
Builds installs and repairs structural woodwork flooring ceilings and cabinets and other structures.
Plans projects as requested and ensures manpower materials and equipment needs are met.
Documents all work performed.
Operates maintains and calibrates hand and power carpentry tools
Reads and comprehends plans and blueprints. Handles administrative work (receiving reports job sheets etc.) as needed
Complies with federal regulations governing safety environmental protection and the use of chemicals and materials common to carpentry
Drives and operates all types of construction equipment as assigned (bucket truck forklift front end loader bob cat backhoe one man lift multi-person lift ditching machine etc.)
Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:
Education can be substituted for work experience.
Four (4) to five (5) years experience in carpentry to include foundation work framing finish carpentry and roofing
Completion of a carpentry vocational/technical school or a recognized apprenticeship program is preferred.
Licensure:
Valid drivers license (Texas by hire date) and a good driving record
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Skilled in all phases of carpentry techniques materials methods of installation and construction
Proficient in multi-tasking to meet deadlines provided
Ability to work well at all levels of management staff and public
Ability to communicate orally and in writing
Knowledgeable of principles methods practices materials equipment and tools for building repairs and maintenance.

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution preferred. Education can be substituted for work experience.

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
This is a regular full-time position requiring the employee to work 40 hours per week.
Hours may vary based on business needs of the department and some weekends evening hours or holidays may be required during special events.
Situations may require additional hours without prior notice.
Required to work on-site during an emergency event.
Perform emergency standby duty during non-duty hours as assigned.
Work Environment:
Work is on active construction sites involving pervasive hazards associated with heavy equipment and tool operations; speeding traffic; loud and constant noise; and regular exposure to chemicals dust fumes and combustible materials.
Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures.
Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g. hard hats respirator masks gloves etc.).
Physical Demands:
Essential functions involve significant demands related to repeated lifting of up to 50 pounds unassisted 100 pounds with assistance rarely carrying tools materials and equipment over rough terrain climbing reaching and bending.
Frequently required to walk sit talk drive hear bend stoop twist and balance; ability to kneel crawl and grasp manual controls and to use foot controls and operate gas diesel and electrically powered equipment.
Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
