Overview

Working with the New York State Center of Excellence in Healthy Water Solutions (CoE) Director the Business Development Manager will provide support to the CoE Director the CoE faculty and the program manager by carrying out the development and coordination of industrial interactions supervise planning and marketing of CoE programs take responsibility for stewarding company-CoE relationships and assist with reporting activities to/from NY State.

The New York State Center of Excellence in Healthy Water Solutions (CoE) is co-led by Clarkson University and SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry (ESF) and delivers synergistic problem-solving on the wide range of water issues impacting New York State and beyond. Leveraging collaboration across academia industry non-for-profit organizations government and stakeholders our mission is to generate solutions that help protect and improve waters for sustainable natural environments healthy populations resilient communities and sound economies. As such the Business Development Manager will be interfacing with both CoE co-Directors and serving all CoE faculty (at Clarkson and ESF).

NYS Centers of Excellence are funded by the New York State Department of Economic Developments Division of Science Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) to foster collaboration between the academic research community and the business sector to develop and commercialize new products and technologies to promote critical private sector investment in emerging high-technology fields in New York State and to create and expand technology-related businesses and employment.

You must reside in one of the following states to work remotely:

Arizona California Colorado Connecticut Florida Indiana Missouri Virginia New York Pennsylvania Tennessee Texas Vermont and Wisconsin.

Responsibilities

Relationship and Research Collaboration: Initiation Development and Cultivation

  • Identify and direct new partnerships existing partnerships

    • Corporate research from websites publications public databases

    • Initial identification of contact and outreach to the company

    • Schedule explorative meetings for companies (state-wide and national)

  • Assist the Directors with planning and subsequent implementation of processes and activities that will build close relationships with key stakeholders

  • Review past relationships rate potential and devise a strategy to engage

  • Identify expertise on campus to address corporate needs that come up with new and existing corporate partners

  • Steward the process from initial exploratory meeting to working through contractual negotiations until successfully establish the partnership

  • Direct and oversee the progress of the relationships by monitoring the progress on projects or project negotiations

  • Prepare the path for renewal of contracts and continuation of projects

  • Steward and advise the company to prepare for maximum economic impact reporting

Knowledge acquisition and strengthening of internal relationships such as faculty and partnering departments

  • Follow faculty research development and acquire understanding of research to facilitate corporate relationships

    • Meet with professors at both institutions on their research

    • Attend seminars on Clarkson and ESF research

    • Read papers where necessary for additional information

    • Keep up-to-date on accolades and news on professors and student work

    • Maintain contact and communications with departments that support and promote corporate engagement and who are natural partners to the CoE such as Clarksons Institute for a Sustainable Environment Shipley Center for Innovation Center for Air and Aquatic ResourcesEngineering and Sciences (CAARES) Career Center; and ESFs CranberryLake Biological Field Station and Newcomb NY Campus.

  • Strengthen relationships with external non-corporate partners

  • Maintain relationship with ESD/NYSTAR representatives by attending events and meetings where they are represented or present

  • Develop and cultivate relationships with counterparts or directors of other CATs CoEs MEPs

  • Cultivate a relationship with FuzeHub and CITEC as they are ideal partners for expanding corporate engagement

  • Provide support for NYSTAR reporting

  • Alert companies for reporting requirements and cycles

  • Initiate timely solicitation of reports

  • Assist with annual report compilation

  • Support companies during the process of drafting and finalizing the support letters

  • Follow industry innovation and state of the art reports on technological advances in the fields relevant to the CoE

  • Represent CoE at external and internal meetings

  • Develop and promote interest among industry to attend and participate at the CoE Annual Meeting and Joint CAT Meeting

Qualifications

Minimal Education: Bachelors degree or higher in science or engineering or the equivalent from a combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education: Masters Degree in science or engineering.

Minimal Experience: Technical knowledge of the water/wastewater treatment industry water resources management as evidenced 5years working in the water industry field in either academic or industrial settings.

Preferred Experience: 10years working in the water industry field and evidence of stewardship of industry-university relationships. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and or knowledge of water issues and the water sector.

Essential Skills

  • Growing record of accomplishments in research and development and/or technical marketing

  • Possess excellent interpersonal communication and computer skills

  • Ability to travel frequently within New York State and to marketing meetings elsewhere throughout the year.

  • Demonstrated ability in program management and raising extramural funding is desirable.

  • Have experience in dealing with multiple corporate and NY State organizations in technology and
    fund-raising areas.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of intellectual property rights.
