Job Summary

Description

Position Objective: The Bioinformatics Scientist will independently provide program coordination to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute on Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) within the National Institutes of Health.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop code and pipelines to conduct analysis; document code for completeness and detail needed for reproducibility
  • Perform literature reviews related to analytical methods as appropriate for study goals
  • Test and evaluate alternative analytical tools to optimize analysis plans for computational speed and appropriateness for the biological hypothesis
  • Develop independent hypotheses for testing on data from the EPR cohort
  • Work with staff to coordinate aspects of EPR data; provide project coordination and management support
  • Advise and train other staff and trainees on statistical genetics approaches
  • Work with staff on writing and reviewing manuscripts and on writing protocols; prepare figures and tables associated with publications
  • Present and discuss summary data in EPR meetings and conferences; summarize and email results to collaborators; prepare PowerPoint slides and summaries for oral presentations
  • Collect analyze and interpret data; update and maintain detailed laboratory notebook sand databases
  • Participate and collaborate in seminars group lab meetings and journal clubs; presentresults and findings for staff discussion
  • Work with staff on projects requiring statistical analysis on data from the Environmental Polymorphisms Registry 1
  • Develop and optimize approaches for genome-wide association studies on complex diseases on participate samples 2
  • Work with staff to organize and harmonize data from the disparate datatypes collected in the EPR cohort 3
  • Provide consultation and expert opinion on approaches for genome wide association studies with multiple types of genetic variants single nucleotide variants copy number variants structural variation
  • Work products and documents related to statistical genetics and biostatistics analysis in the EPR; develop and optimize genome-wide association studies; organize and harmonize data from disparate datatypes.
  • Work products and documents related to developing code and pipelines to conduct analysis; document code for completeness and detail needed for reproducibility; perform literature reviews related to analytical methods.
  • Work products and documents related to testing and evaluating alternative analytical tools to optimize analysis plans; develop independent hypotheses for testing on data; coordinate aspects of EPR data; provide project coordination and management support.
  • Work products and documents related to writing and reviewing manuscripts and on writing protocols; prepare figures and tables; collect analyze and interpret data; update and maintain notebooks and databases; participate and collaborate in seminars group meetings and journal clubs; present results and findings for staff discussion.
  • Work products and documents related to preparation of abstracts talks and posters for local and national scientific meetings; ensure that final tables and figures are reviewed raw data prepared and documented for reproducibility.


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Genetics Bioinformatics or similar
  • Skilled in R Python Shell PERL and SAS
  • Extensive expertise in genome-wide association studies in complex trait analysis

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with non-technical and technical staff
  • Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
