Behavior Assistance Team (BAT) Paraeducator

M-F 6.5 hours/day 180 days/year

Position Purpose

The Behavior Assistance Team (BAT) Paraeducator provides targeted behavioral support to students requiring Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions within the districts Multi-Tiered System

of Supports (MTSS).

Working under the direct supervision of a School Psychologist and in collaboration with building staff the BAT Paraeducator implements individualized and group behavior interventions supports crisis prevention and response and assists in data collection to improve student outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities

Implementation of Behavior Interventions

Implement Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavior interventions as designed by the School Psychologist and/or student support team

Support implementation of:

Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)

Check-In/Check-Out (CICO) systems

Social skills interventions

Reinforcement systems

Provide consistent structured behavioral support aligned to student plans

Student Support & De-escalation

Support students in developing:

Self-regulation skills

Replacement behaviors

Coping strategies

Utilize proactive and responsive strategies to:

Prevent escalation

De-escalate challenging behaviors safely

Assist in maintaining safe learning environments for all students

Data Collection & Documentation

Collect and record behavior data as directed by the School Psychologist or team

including:

Frequency duration and intensity of behaviors

Student response to interventions

Maintain accurate and timely documentation to support data-based decision making

Share data with the supervising School Psychologist and school teams

Collaboration with School Teams

Work collaboratively with:

Classroom teachers

MTSS/LAP/Title Teacher

CARE Team Leads

Administrators

Special Education staff

Support consistent implementation of behavior strategies across settings

Participate in team meetings as requested to provide input on student progress

Support for Crisis Response

Assist in crisis response situations under the direction of trained staff

Follow district protocols related to:

De-escalation

Safety procedures

Restraint/isolation (if applicable and trained)

Support safe transitions for students following behavioral incidents

Capacity Building & Staff Support

Model appropriate behavior support strategies for classroom staff

Assist staff in implementing behavior supports with fidelity

Support generalization of skills across environments (classroom recess transitions etc.)

Supervision & Role Clarity

The BAT Paraeducator works under the direct supervision of a School Psychologist

who:

Designs and oversees intervention plans

Provides training and guidance

Reviews data and adjusts supports

The BAT Paraeducator:

Implements interventions

Collects data

Does not independently design or modify intervention plans

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent (required)

Completion of paraeducator requirements per Washington State guidelines

Experience working with students exhibiting behavioral challenges preferred

Training or willingness to be trained in:

De-escalation strategies

Behavior intervention techniques

Trauma-informed practices

Preferred Skills

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to remain calm and responsive in high-stress situations

Ability to follow structured plans and maintain consistency

Collaborative team member

Work Environment

Works across multiple classrooms or school sites as assigned

May support students in a variety of settings (classroom playground transitions etc.)

Requires flexibility and responsiveness to student needs throughout the school day

Physical Requirements

Ability to move quickly and safely in response to student needs

May require standing walking and assisting students throughout the day

May require implementation of approved physical safety interventions (if trained)

Education/Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Pass the Paraeducator assessment
• Job related experience

Employment is contingent upon successful clearance of a Washington State Patrol FBI fingerprint criminal history background check and Sexual Misconduct background check.
