TheUtah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind(USDB) invites you to consider an enjoyable andgratifying employment opportunity with our agency. We are looking for a caring and motivated individual to fill the position of Behavior Aide for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing working at the Kenneth Burdett School for the Deaf in Ogden.

This position works only during the school year August through May.

Roles and Responsibilities
As a Behavior Aide you will:

• Work under the direction of the Behavior Specialist and Educational Director to intervene with students demonstrating challenging behaviors. Primary duties include but are not limited to engaging in the following activities with support and direction.
• Work closely with the student to understand their specific needs challenges and triggers.
• Utilize safe and appropriate procedures when managing students with challenging behavior.
• Interpret and implement written behavior plans.
• Engage in reinforcement strategies (desired items/actions attention or removal of demands/aversive situations) to increase the frequency or duration of safe and appropriate replacement behaviors and to build a repertoire of communication social interaction and problem-solving skills.
• Utilize and model the implementation of positive behavior supports with students.
• Utilize and model safe and appropriate prompting procedures to promote both successful and independent responding.
• Implement data collection systems accurately collect and summarize data for the school.
• Collaborate with school team members to provide support effectively and without disruption to the environment or other individuals in the environment.
• Develop and implement tailored strategies and interventions to address destructive behaviors and promote positive alternatives.
• Facilitate effective communication with the student by using appropriate communication methods (e.g. sign language visual supports augmentative and alternative communication systems).
• Foster the students communication skills to enhance their ability to express needs and wants.
  
  

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
The Ideal Candidate must or be willing to possess:

• Practical knowledge of basic classroom techniques and organization
• American Sign Language (ASL) skills are required for assignments in the ASL classrooms
• Techniques for assisting and providing effective support to classroom instructors
• Practical skills in working effectively with students
• Willingness to learn and receive training on the job
• Experience as an aide paraprofessional or other related experience
• Deal with people in a manner that shows sensitivity tact and professionalism
• Work independently
• Ability to follow the teachers direction and lesson plans
• Communicate clearly and effectively
• Maintain strict confidentiality
• Must be dependable and have good organizational and time-management skills
• Preference will be given to current employees with USDB

Supplemental Information

• Successful completion of a criminal background check
• Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations e.g. being subject to possible physical attack etc.
• Typically the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however there may be some walking standing bending carrying light items driving an automobile etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
