The Before/Aftercare Group Leader is an integral part of the Academic team facilitating daily programming at their assigned campus during split-shift hours from 6:30 am 8:30 am and 1:30 pm 6:30 pm. This role is the primary point of contact for students ensuring they move through their morning and afternoon routines with structure safety and joy. The hourly rate for this role starts at $18.45/hour and is based on educational attainment and relevant years of experience. This is a full-time fully on-site role based at KIPP DC Connect Academy KIPP DC LEAP Academy or KIPP DCs Learning Center. with an immediate start date.

About the Role
KIPP DCs Extended Learning Team will offer high-quality before and after school programming for students in grades PK 8 during the 2026-2027 school year. Programming will take place at the Benning Wheeler and Webb campuses. The Extended Learning team is seeking high-energy reliable individuals to create a safe and enriching environment where students feel valued and supported. Group Leaders report directly to the Program Director and collaborate with the Director of Enrichment to ensure program-wide success.
The Group Leader is a mission-driven educator responsible for the direct supervision and engagement of a consistent group of students. Following KIPP DCs commitment to academic excellence and joy Group Leaders implement daily enrichment activities provide homework support and build strong relationships with students and families.
Location and Type of Work
This is an non-exempt position and will report to the Before/Aftercare Program Director. As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support which requires this position to be fully onsite. This role is currently required to be onsite or in schools during regular work hours.
Responsibilities
The percentages for each key responsibility are estimates and other duties may be assigned. Flexibility and responsiveness are encouraged to accommodate organizational needs.
Student Engagement Culture and PBIS (30% of time)
- Lead a group of 15 - 20 students through daily schedules including active play STEM arts and homework help.
- Facilitate enrichment lessons provided by the regional team with enthusiasm and preparation.
- Create a sense of belonging and community within the student group.
- Implement a joyful affirming and belonging-centered classroom culture using KIPP DCs PBIS-aligned systems.
- Maintain consistent expectations for behavior and utilize positive redirection and reinforcement.
- Model emotional constancy and professionalism in all student and family interactions.
- Support the execution of monthly celebration calendars and DEI-themed activities.
Safety & Supervision (30% of time)
- Maintain active supervision of students at all times ensuring safety during activities transitions playground time and snack.
- Adhere to all OSSE and Washington D.C. childcare licensing regulations specifically regarding staff-to-student ratios.
- Accurately record daily attendance and report any student incidents or injuries to the Program Director immediately using KIPP DCs and OSSEs reporting protocols.
Systems and Routines Execution(20% of time)
- Execute smooth systems for morning arrival classroom transitions and evening dismissal.
- Ensure the classroom or shared space is maintained organized and reset at the end of each shift.
- Support students in the handoff between the school and before/aftercare programming.
Family & Community Engagement (20% of time)
- Greet families warmly during drop-off and pick-up providing positive updates on student progress and behavior.
- Partner with the Program Director to address family concerns or provide necessary program information.
- Build strong respectful relationships with families through consistent communication.
- Represent KIPP DC professionally at school and community events.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must meet OSSE state childcare licensing requirements including one of the following:
- Bachelors or Associates degree in a related field.
- 20 college credits (semester) plus at least one year of experience with children.
- Two or more years of qualifying experience in DC licensed childcare.
- Strong leadership communication and organizational skills.
- Proven track record of strong relationships with students and families.
- Demonstrated record of timeliness strong attendance reliability and responsiveness.
- Demonstrated ability to create a positive predictable and productive program culture.
- Must complete and pass a background check and drug test upon receipt of a conditional job offer.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with restorative practice models.
- At least one year of experience working in a charter school network.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively supervise students and lift up to 40 pounds as needed.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
