Job Summary

AY2627 GEI Tutor - Global English Institute (Work-Study Required)

This position presents exciting opportunities to help international students learn about language culture(s) and society in the U.S. While working with international students you will expand your multicultural understanding by learning about the students cultures as well as gaining valuable insights into the English language and your own culture(s)! At the same time you can form friendships that can span oceans and years. Training in English language tutoring is provided.

GEI student workers report to the Assistant Director of the fall and spring semesters GEI tutors may workup to 15 hours per week at an hourly rate of $12.

The position includes all or some of the following responsibilities:
Provide one-on-one tutoring support for additional support to GEI students who are either instructor-referred and/or self-referred
Provide in-class support as requested by instructors e.g. act as a conversation partner/instructors assistant in speaking/listening and notetaking classes act as a classroom aide to work with lower-level students on exercises for skills development or
activities that allow higher-level students more opportunities to practice
Maintain tutorial records and files; communicate regularly with instructors who refer students.
Assist in planning and attend GEI events
Provide general office support e.g. production of weekly newsletter social media posts
Attend orientation training and meeting sessions

Qualifications:

The following list represents preferred not required areas of prior experience and/or current interests.

Education/Skills:
Very strong English language skills especially in writing and superior grades at Duquesne University
Excellent interpersonal communication skills including courtesy patience flexibility and sensitivity to other cultures
Competency with both computer applications (e.g. MS Office Suite) and social media
Good organization and record keeping skills

Experience:
