About the Position

Are you someone who is a forward thinker who recognizes and thinks of solutions for challenges within the Dependency system a team leader and a team player an effective communicator who works well with others in the Dependency legal community and an expert in conducting legal research and writing If so we are looking for you to become our new Attorney this role you will work closely with office leadership to manage the operational side of our Dependency division. You will collaborate with internal as well as external system partners to ensure the mission and vision of the office are met while promoting the delivery of appropriate and cost-effective legal representation.

PLEASE NOTE: This position may carry a reduced caseload of either Dependency Appeals or direct parent representation.

We Require

  • Eight years of experience as a practicing attorney

  • Must be admitted to practice law and be a current member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application

  • Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school

We Also Value

  • Ten or more years as a practicing attorney

  • Five or more years of experience representing clients in Title 8 child welfare matters

  • Two or more years of experience as a supervisor and/or significant experience handling supervisor duties and responsibilities in an acting capacity

  • Previous work experience in indigent defense

Job Contributions

  • Oversees the attorney supervisors and provides guidance to support staff in the Dependency division

  • Assists with the implementation application and oversight of policies procedures and practices for the office

  • Ensures compliance with applicable ethics and court rules and state and federal statutory and constitutional mandates

  • Evaluates personnel and program performance; takes appropriate action to respond to noted concerns

  • Researches consults and advises the Public Advocate on administrative procedural and legal matters

  • Researches and analyzes legal issues using both computerized legal research and hard copy tools; discusses and presents such analysis to office leadership

  • Provides guidance and review of motions and special actions

  • Monitors legislation and proposed rules or rule changes that impact Dependency and public defense or related services in Arizona; collaborates with others within the office and within Public Defense Services (PDS) to determine if a response is needed and works on a response if applicable

  • Identifies substantial case issues; tracks and supports the challenging of the issues

  • Represents the division at committee system partner and taskforce meetings

  • Meets confers and works cooperatively with public officials agency heads justice professionals private citizens service providers and other system partners regarding applicable civil criminal and juvenile justice matters

  • Develops and presents training sessions (CLE qualified) to the Dependency division as needed

Working Conditions

  • Traumatic subject matter (crime scenes accidents etc.) interruptions time pressure high volumes of work handling multiple or complicated tasks unscheduled tasks frequently changing tasks accuracy decision making concentration vigilance teamwork working in close physical proximity with others public contact and overtime/rotating shifts may be a common occurrence

  • May be required to lift 15-25 pounds from floor to waist; 15 pounds waist to shoulder or shoulder to overhead; carry 15-25 pounds a distance of 100 feet or push/pull 100 pounds a distance of 100 feet

  • Valid Arizona drivers license is required upon hire
