Position HighlightsReporting to the Chief Risk Officer the Manager of Enterprise Risk and Insurance Programs leads the Universitys enterprise risk management insurance and claims administration functions including supervision of professional staff and oversight of institutional insurance programs. The position develops and advances enterprise risk management processes that identify assess monitor and report strategic operational financial compliance and reputational risks across the University. Serving as a trusted advisor to university leadership departments insurers brokers and external partners the Manager provides expertise in risk mitigation insurance strategy contractual risk transfer and loss prevention. The role promotes a culture of risk awareness resilience and risk-informed decision-making in support of the Universitys mission and strategic objectives.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Directs the administration of the Universitys insurance programs including property liability workers compensation and other risk financing mechanisms ensuring appropriate coverage and alignment with institutional risk management objectives.
  • Oversees the management of insurance claims from initial reporting through resolution including investigation documentation claim analysis coordination with insurers brokers third-party administrators legal counsel and state claims representatives as applicable.
  • Provides guidance and consultation to university departments on insurance coverage claims procedures loss reporting and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Monitors claims trends and loss data to identify emerging risks evaluate loss exposures and recommend risk mitigation and loss prevention strategies that strengthen the Universitys insurance and risk management programs.
  • Provides strategic coordination and oversight of the Universitys enterprise risk management (ERM) program by partnering with stakeholders to identify assess monitor and communicate enterprise risks that may impact institutional objectives.
  • Manages the institutional risk register and collaborates with university leaders and departments to evaluate strategic operational financial compliance and reputational risks while developing and monitoring appropriate mitigation strategies and controls.
  • Develops ERM reports dashboards and risk analytics to inform leadership decision-making identify emerging risk trends and support risk governance and oversight activities.
  • Provides consultation training and risk management guidance to university stakeholders while continuously enhancing ERM frameworks processes tools and reporting capabilities to strengthen organizational resilience and support institutional objectives.
  • Provides guidance and technical expertise to university units administrators and employees on insurance requirements contractual risk transfer provisions and risk financing strategies including indemnification and hold harmless clauses waivers of subrogation limitation of liability provisions and other risk allocation mechanisms.
  • Evaluates and advises on the scope applicability and adequacy of University and State of Arizona insurance programs including property general liability professional liability workers compensation and international travel coverage.
  • Reviews complex agreements affiliations leases research-related contracts and special event activities to evaluate risk allocation and insurance implications.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to identify and mitigate contractual and operational risks while ensuring alignment with university policies regulatory requirements State of Arizona requirements and risk management best practices.
  • Leads risk analytics exposure reporting and program performance measurement to support insurance renewals claims management enterprise risk reporting and strategic risk financing decisions.
  • Develops dashboards key risk indicators and metrics to identify trends and opportunities for continuous improvement in risk management and loss prevention programs.
  • Provides leadership supervision coaching and performance management for assigned staff.
  • Establishes priorities supports professional development and fosters a collaborative customer-focused environment that advances departmental and institutional goals.

  • Knowledge of enterprise risk management and insurance programs.
  • Skill in claims administration and insurance coverage analysis.
  • Skill in risk loss and data analysis and reporting.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder relationship management skills.
  • Ability to assess risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Familiarity with reviewing Certificates of Insurance (COIs) and understanding vendor insurance requirements is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving responsibilities and support ongoing development of risk management processes procedures and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while supporting departmental and institutional objectives

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience including 2 years of managerial experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting risk management programs safety initiatives or compliance-related functions in a higher education or similar environment preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to leverage data analytics dashboards and software platforms such as Origami Risk to support risk assessment claims management and reporting activities.
