ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT

REPORTS TO: SUPERINTENDENT

SALARY: ADMINISTRATIVE SCALE COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE (BASED ON FY27 SCALE)

DEPARTMENT: CENTRAL OFFICE

CONTRACT LENGTH: 12 MONTH

START DATE: JULY 1

Position Overview: The Assistant Superintendent provides leadership coordination oversight and support for division wide instructional operational personnel and organizational initiatives to ensure the effective implementation of the mission vision goals and priorities of Brunswick County Public Schools. The position assists the Superintendent with the administration and management of the school division while supporting continuous improvement efforts focused on student achievement operational effectiveness employee performance and community engagement.

The Assistant Superintendent works collaboratively with principals directors administrators teachers staff families community organizations and stakeholders to support division operations instructional programs personnel management school improvement efforts and strategic initiatives. The position assists with ensuring compliance with federal state and local laws regulations School Board policies and division procedures while promoting a positive safe and student-centered learning environment throughout the division.

Direct Accountability and Reporting:The Assistant Superintendent will be evaluated annually based upon the responsibilities outlined in the job description division expectations established goals and objectives leadership effectiveness operational and instructional outcomes compliance measures program effectiveness and contributions to student success and division initiatives.

Education/Credentials:

  • Masters degree required; doctorate preferred.
  • Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with Administration and Supervision endorsement required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of educational leadership required.
  • Successful experience as a principal preferred.
  • Successful experience in central office level preferred.

Qualifications: Experience in educational leadership school administration instructional leadership personnel management operational oversight strategic planning or related administrative experience preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum and instruction school operations budgeting personnel administration school improvement federal and state regulations and organizational leadership required. Strong communication collaboration organizational problem solving leadership and decision making skills required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Superintendent with the overall leadership administration and operation of Brunswick County Public Schools.
  • Assists with division wide strategic planning organizational improvement efforts and implementation of School Board goals priorities and initiatives.
  • Assists with the supervision support and evaluation of principals directors administrators professional personnel support personnel and clerical personnel as assigned.
  • Assists with personnel administration including recruitment retention staffing employee relations leadership development and professional growth opportunities.
  • Assists with the implementation monitoring and evaluation of instructional programs school improvement efforts operational practices and student achievement initiatives.
  • Collaborates with principals division leadership departments community organizations agencies higher education institutions and stakeholders to support division initiatives partnerships communication and organizational effectiveness.
  • Coordinates and assists with accreditation activities audits compliance measures monitoring activities and required local state and federal reporting requirements.
  • Maintains compliance with School Board policies federal and state regulations accreditation standards and division procedures.
  • Participates in School Board meetings leadership meetings crisis response situations safety planning activities and other division related functions as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Provides leadership guidance and oversight for instructional programs child nutrition services maintenance and facilities operations transportation services and operational effectiveness.
  • Reviews division programs processes procedures and operational practices to ensure effectiveness accountability and compliance.
  • Serves as the Superintendents Designee in the absence of the Superintendent or as assigned including representation at meetings operational matters compliance activities personnel matters community events and other official division functions.
  • Serves on School Board committees division committees and advisory committees as assigned or applicable.
  • Supports budget development financial planning resource allocation grant initiatives and operational planning efforts as assigned.
  • Supports communication family engagement community engagement stakeholder relations and positive school and community partnerships throughout the division.
  • Supports data collection program evaluation continuous improvement efforts school safety initiatives student support services and division wide operational initiatives.
  • Supports schools and departments with addressing stakeholder concerns while fostering positive relationships with students staff families and community members.
Work Environment: Work is performed in a school and office environment with frequent interaction with students staff families and community members. Travel throughout the division may be required. Occasional travel for conferences division initiatives field trips or school related activities may occur.
