Job Description

The University of Nevada Reno is a land grant university with a vision of building global expertise in research and education to support the nations drive to create a robust supply chain of critical minerals and materials (CMM). Nevada is taking on this challenge striving to grow its CMM industry (mining the ore materials processing manufacturing products for the end user and recycling of spent products for resource recovery). The region is experiencing substantial investments in the CMM industry and UNR leads the Nevada Tech Hub which is using $21 million from the US Economic Development Administration to further catalyze the lithium economy locally.


The School of Civil Chemical and Environmental Engineering plays a key role in Nevadas CMM growth and invites applications at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized externally funded research program foster interdisciplinary collaborations and contribute to undergraduate and graduate education in chemical engineering. The intended start date for the position is July 1 2027.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field is required and the candidate must hold at least one (1) degree in chemical engineering.
  • The candidate must possess expertise in critical minerals and materials broadly defined.
  • Candidates are requested to describe their expertise in CMM in their cover letter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to candidates whose work integrates innovative separation technologies process intensification circular economy approaches or critical mineral and rare-earth element recovery to address pressing national and global supply chain challenges.
  • Applicants with experience applying machine learning tools in their research are especially encouraged.
  • Demonstrated record in teaching is desired.
