The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (MOPD) seeks zealouslitigators to serve as Assistant Public Defenders in Baltimore CountyMaryland. Assistant Public Defenders combine their demonstrated commitmentwith their strong and zealous litigation skills to provide exceptionalrepresentation on behalf of their clients. OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:
This position requires a willingness to learn train and practiceexceptional trial skills innovative thinking
investigative skills and the ability to work as a team in managing anactive district court caseload. Attorneys work in conjunction with socialworkers investigators and core staff in a team-oriented must be able to balance a client-centered approach to representationwith advocacy to address systemic inequity and the collateral consequencesthat lead to deeper system involvement. This position will be located inall three Baltimore County district courts. Attorneys will be required torotate between the district courts depending on need.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Passionate and zealous representation of clients at every stage of thecriminal process.
Ensure clients are consistently heard and respected.
Conducts legal research and analysis including changes in lawslegislation procedural rules court decisions and case precedents inpreparation for trial and to determine/ anticipate legal problemsand propose resolutions.
Effectively and compassionately communicate with clients team memberscolleagues and service providers to ensure optimal outcomes for clients.
Counsels and advises clients on changes in law court decisions andlegal issues.
Negotiates with prosecutors and other parties to establish agreementsto resolve cases favorably for the client.
Resourcefully manage a full caseload.
Continuously seek professional and personal development throughtrainings CLEs and trial skills courses.
Other duties as assigned by the Public Defender.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary is dependent on experience and salary rules will apply to State ofMaryland employees.
This would be a lateral transfer for any internal candidates applying.
