Job Summary

What Youll Do

As an AI Automation Engineer you will help shape how work is automated orchestrated and improved across Avalara. You will lead the design and engineering of scalable AI powered automation solutions using n8n as a core orchestration platform to improve productivity quality and operational scale. This is a highly visible individual contributor role that combines hands on engineering platform ownership and technical leadership to accelerate business transformation across the organization. You will partner with teams across Avalara to embed intelligent workflows AI agents and data-driven decisioning into business processes while establishing standards that enable secure reliable and measurable automation. This role reports to the Sr Manager Enterprise Systems.

This is a full-time role with Avalara offering a fully remote work arrangement.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

Own and help execute Avalaras enterprise AI automation and transformation strategy with n8n serving as a core workflow orchestration platform

Design and build scalable & secure automation solutions that reduce manual work and improve business process efficiency

Develop AI-enabled workflows intelligent agents and decisioning frameworks that support business transformation across multiple functions

Architect API-first and event-driven integrations that connect enterprise systems automation platforms and AI services

Establish platform standards for development deployment monitoring reliability and governance across automation initiatives.

Define and maintain CI/CD processes environment strategies and release practices that improve automation quality and delivery speed

Create reusable automation frameworks workflow templates prompt patterns and AI agent accelerators that increase consistency and reuse

Implement observability monitoring and performance measurement practices for both traditional and AI-driven workflows.

Lead technical design reviews workflow assessments and post-incident reviews to improve platform reliability and operational excellence

Mentor engineers and implementation partners while promoting best practices for AI automation agent orchestration responsible AI and workflow engineering

What Youll Need To Be Successful

Bachelors degree in computer science Engineering or a related field and 10 years of experience in enterprise automation workflow engineering integration engineering or platform architecture

Deep hands-on experience with n8n or Boomi including designing and operating enterprise automation solutions and AI-enabled workflows

Strong expertise in API-first and event-driven architectures REST APIs webhooks OAuth JWT and secure integration practices

Experience implementing CI/CD automation governance observability and reliability practices across enterprise-scale platforms

Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS Azure or Google Cloud Platform including AI and machine learning services and large language model integrations

Demonstrated ability to identify high-value AI automation opportunities build AI-enabled solutions responsibly measure business impact influence technical direction and raise engineering standards through mentorship and leadership.

Enabled AI-native automation capabilities including production-grade AI agents integrated into core workflows

Improved automation reliability and reduced workflow failure rates and/or MTTR

Standardized automation patterns including AI-enabled orchestration patterns adopted across new transformation initiatives

Implemented measurable observability including AI performance business impact and cost metrics

Delivered AI-driven automation use cases that reduce manual effort improve decision-making or shorten process cycle time across multiple functions

Raised execution standards across the automation team through mentorship technical leadership and AI capability development
