AHSCollege & Career Counselor
Minimum Qualifications and Training:
- Requires a Masters degree in School Counseling from an accredited college or university
- Requires state certification in Guidance and Counseling
- Requires a valid state drivers license
- Requires (4) four years of related experience; previous classroom teaching experience preferred
- Proficient in the use of computers to include spreadsheet database and word processing applications
- Experience in college advising counseling or career development preferred
- Strong knowledge of college admissions financial aid career pathways
Goals: The College and Career Counselor supports students in developing and achieving postsecondary goals by providing guidance in college planning career exploration and workforce readiness. This role ensures all students graduate with a clear actionable plan for success beyond high school.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Implements a comprehensive guidance and counseling program based on state and District standards; collaborates with supervisor other counselors principal assistant principals faculty staff and community resources in the planning coordination and assessment of the counseling program
- Provide individual and group counseling focused on college and career readines
- Guide students through college selection applications and admissions processes
- Support completion of financial aid applications including FAFSA and scholarships
- Facilitate career exploration through assessments job shadowing internships and workforce partnerships
- Develop and implement a comprehensive college and career readiness program aligned to district goals
- Monitor and track student progress toward postsecondary readiness benchmarks
- Build relationships with colleges universities military representatives and local employers
- Coordinate college visits career fairs and informational workshops for students and families
- Provide resources and support for students pursuing alternative pathways (technical training military workforce)
- Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with state and district requirements
- Counsel individuals and groups of students in setting and developing strategies for the achievement of academic social/personal development and other identified goals
- Works to discover and develop special abilities of students
- Work to resolve students educational handicaps
- Administers various tests to assess the development and needs of students
- Provide referrals to various school district and community services when appropriate
- Establishes and maintains confidential student case files; prepares and submits required records and reports
- Attend meetings with staff and service providers to discuss individual student education plans and progress
- Conducts conferences with parents to discuss student progress and problems; assists in presenting parent workshops as required
- Participate with the principal and vice-principal the coordination of student registration course selection and student scheduling
- Conduct data analysis of attendance detention and failure rates and other factors to help determine guidance counseling needs in assigned school
- Supports all platforms/programs relating to the college and career pathway development of students
- May assist in monitoring students in the cafeteria and/or during student arrival or dismissal
- Receives and responds to inquiries concerns and complaints in areas of responsibility
- Overseeing thedevelopment of the complete Tennessee graduation framework college and career advisement skills encouraging ethical behavior and staying updated on current trends in school counseling etc.
- Performs routine administrative/office tasks as required including but not limited to preparing correspondence copying and filing documents answering the telephone sending and receiving faxes entering and retrieving computer data ordering supplies
- Attend training conferences and workshops as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent and/or Principal
Supervisory Responsibility: Manages classroom instruction for a roster of students oversees a grade-level caseload and ensures student supervision in the classroom and shared common areas.
Working Conditions: Exposure to the following situations may range from remote to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.

The counselor maintains a forty-hour (40) workweek and works additional hours as required to carry out all of the duties and responsibilities of the position. This counselor position is 10.5-month position at the high school.
