Position Overview
Shorter Universitys Ware School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Department of Natural Sciences invites applications for qualified adjunct/part-time instructors to teach undergraduate chemistry courses. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong disciplinary expertise effective teaching ability and a commitment to student learning aligned with the institutions mission.
Primary Teaching Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate chemistry courses such as:
- General Chemistry Lectures
- General Chemistry Laboratory
- Upper-level Chemistry/Biochemistry courses as needed
- Deliver instruction consistent with approved course outcomes and departmental expectations
- Assess student learning and provide timely constructive feedback
- Maintain regular communication with students (including timely response to inquiries)
- Submit grades attendance and required assessment documentation by institutional deadlines
Institutional & Professional Responsibilities
- Support learning outcomes assessment and accreditation processes as requested
- Adhere to institutional policies (e.g. FERPA) and academic integrity standards
- Contribute to a positive learning environment that supports student success and retention
Qualifications
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Doctoral degree in Chemistry Biochemistry or related field or
- Masters degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry or
- Masters degree in a related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Chemistry
Additional requirements
- Agreement with Shorter Universitys Mission Lifestyle Statement and Statement of Faith
- Graduate transcripts documenting relevant coursework (official transcripts required upon hire)
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated content expertise appropriate for undergraduate instruction
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience teaching undergraduate courses
- Experience with Learning Management Systems (e.g. Canvas)
- Commitment to engaging and ethical teaching practices
Work Environment
- Courses are delivered in a face-to-face environment
- Teaching assignments are based on departmental needs and enrollment
- Adjunct faculty play a key role in supporting student achievement and academic quality
