Supervisor of District Communications & Planning
Minimum Qualifications and Training:
- Bachelors degree in the area of mass communications journalism public relations or related field required
- Strong written and verbal communication skills required
- Five (5) or more years of progressive experience in the area of communications journalism public relations or a related field required. Supervisory experience preferred
- Experience in the field of education and familiarity with current trends in education desirable
- Proficient in the use of computer applications and social media platforms as well as web-site design
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate or acceptable
Goals: Advance the goals and objectives of Arlington Community Schools by coordinating district communications through clear consistent reliable communication to district stakeholders as appropriate. Informs and responds to media requests by providing correct and timely information impacting the school system. Promotes the school district via social media as well as other communication venues. Manages all aspects of branding of the school district. Oversees and/or assists with a variety of district planning needs including but not limited to: the ACS Strategic Plan Capital Improvement Plan Instructional Calendar development and community event planning.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Lead public relations marketing media relations community relations and related fields
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all media and disseminates accurate informational materials to pertinent publics through the media
- Demonstrated ability to analyze enrollment trends demographic data community growth and district performance metrics using data analytics platforms (e.g. PowerSchool Analytics) to support strategic planning resource allocation and long-range district decision-making
- Analyzes internal and external communication issues and advises the Superintendent Executive Staff and District Office Departments
- Initiates and prepares responses to media requests concerning policies and activities of the school system
- Coordinates and develops multi-media presentational material and maintains knowledge of current multimedia presentation technology
- Identifies areas to be addressed in presentation campaigns characteristics and needs of the target audience and appropriate communication techniques
- Develops recommended approaches and drafts of public relations/recruitment materials for approval
- Supervise and mentor high school interns in the creation of digital content and social media communications ensuring materials align with district branding messaging and communication standards
- Develops and/or enhances current internal and external communication strategies and messages to include social media platforms as well as the districts mass notification system
- Manages the districts website utilizing the most relevant strategies tactics web technologies tools and incorporates best practices on an on-going basis
- Develop and cultivate strategic partnerships with local businesses and community organizations to expand collaborative opportunities enhance district initiatives and secure sponsorships that support student programs events and district priorities
- Establishes and maintains positive internal relationships with students school board staff and community with a focus of promoting the school district
- Provides trainings to district office administrator and school-level personnel on communication tactics and best practices
- Mobilizes volunteer groups to assist with district goals and initiatives and events
- Assists executive staff by serving as a liaison between the district and the Arlington Education Foundation and other civic/community groups when appropriate
- Manage district online communications strategies and tactics latest web technologies tools and incorporate best practices
- Writes and edits communications for a variety of audiences in a variety of formats (electronic and print)
- Develops the yearly ACS Instructional Calendar in conjunction with the Superintendent Leadership Roundtable
- Oversees manages and helps develop the 5-Year ACS Strategic Plan process which includes research planning implementation evaluation and committee development
- Assists the Superintendent Executive Director of Operations and Chief Financial Officer in developing the districts Capital Improvement Plan
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines with a focus on results
- Establishes appropriate branding of the district and supports the branding of ACS in day-to-day marketing efforts as well as in the recruitment of prospective students and employees
- Communicates effectively both orally and in writing
- Performs other duties as needed or requested by the Superintendent
Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises the Communication Media Specialist and High School interns
Working Conditions: Exposure to the following situations may range from remote to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.
- Standard classroom environment; all school campuses and athletic events
- Consistent and prompt attendance is imperative for this role
- Serve on Executive staff
- Attend Board meetings and night events

The Supervisor of District Communications & Planning maintains a forty-hour (40) workweek and works additional hours as required to carry out all the duties and responsibilities of the position. This is a twelve (12) month position.
FSLA Status: Exempt
Reports To: Superintendent
Salary: $109790 - $118840 pending similar or like experience
