We are currently recruiting for anAccounting Careers Trainee with the target class ofRevenue Examiner 1within the Employer Status Unit. The Employer Status Unit is responsible for determining an employers liability for unemployment insurance coverage; registering employers for Connecticut State Unemployment Taxes; assisting employers in their efforts to comply with state unemployment insurance laws and regulations.

The incumbent will respond to inquiries related to:

  • Annual Rate Notice.
  • Registration of employer for Unemployment tax reporting.
  • Determination of status and liability of employers (e.g. new successor non-subject status).
  • Status of employers (new employer successor).
  • Change of address status.
  • Discontinue/release of liability for registered employers.
  • Changes in payment option (Tax or Benefit Reimbursing).
  • Interpretation of Unemployment laws and regulations.
  • Joint and Unit accounts of commonly controlled entities.
  • Requests for partial transfers of Merit Rating experience.
  • Clearance statements for corporations regarding status with Secretary of State.
  • Identify potential employers subject to UI tax law.
  • Notify employers of their liability and initial rates.
  • Terminate inactive employer accounts.
  • Process and record all coverage information.
  • Handle liability appeals.
  • Maintain accurate and current files on each employer.

in accounting and/or qualifying experience

The salary for an employee who completes any of the above minimum requirements after initial appointment to the Accounting Careers Trainee job class will be adjusted commensurate with the schedule above and effective the pay period following the date the degree has been conferred or the pay period following the date the appropriate number of credits as indicated above have been earned.

For current state employees compensation will be in accordance with guidelines for computing salary adjustments set forth by the Department of Administrative Services Determining Salary Upon Change in Class Manual.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work for development of skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position;
  • Performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period;
  • Examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes regulations guidelines or accepted accounting principles;
  • May receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts establishing financial statements and schedules and preparing budget estimates;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • accounting and auditing principles and practices;
    • business mathematics and statistics;
    • business uses of information technology;
    • effective report writing;
  • Ability to
    • read and understand written materials;
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in conflict resolution
  • Experience in accounting or auditing
  • Experience with the CT Unemployment Insurance Program
  • Experience in prioritizing multiple assignments with competing deadlines
  • Experience in providing verbal and written communication to customers
