Job Description

Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) is a program that serves Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and their families throughout the State of Michigan. Programming and services are provided to both day students and students in our student housing. This position will report to the Principal at Michigan School for the Deaf.

The Academic Support Substitute supports the academic program by providing consistent reliable coverage for instructional and support staff absences. This position ensures continuity of learning by delivering prepared lessons maintaining a productive classroom environment and assisting with various academic or operational needs throughout the building.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide classroom instruction based on teacherprepared lesson plans.

Provide coverage for paraprofessionals office staff or programrelated activities when necessary.

Maintain a safe inclusive and orderly learning environment.

Supervise students in classrooms hallways common areas or during transitions as needed.

Support academic programming by assisting with smallgroup instruction intervention activities or enrichment when not assigned to a classroom.

Follow established building procedures schedules and expectations.

Communicate effectively with staff administrators and students.

Manage student behavior using programaligned expectations and protocols.

Complete required documentation such as attendance and incident reports.

Assist with other duties as assigned including coverage for paraprofessionals office staff or programrelated activities when necessary.

Provide clerical support to the leadership team to oversee behavior tracking credentialing and MSD growth program support.


Other Duties as Assigned

Help to support lunch supervision and provide coverage for aide breaks.

Perform additional tasks or responsibilities as directed by leadership to support department operations organizational goals or emergent staffing needs.

Participate in meetings training or special projects as requested.

Adapt responsibilities based on changing priorities or circumstances.


State of Michigan Employees/MSD Contracted Employees: Position duties should not conflict with work schedule if so annual leave must be requested. If absent you will not be paid for that day.


Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications possess one or more of the following:

Bachelors degree required

Experience working with school aged children in a Deaf school

Knowledge of employment practices and relevant regulations.

Strong interpersonal organizational and conflict-resolution skills.

Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Must be fluent in American Sign Language

Work Hours & Total Compensation:

Academic Support Substitute will work from August 1-July 1 46 weeks of the year. Time off in one-week blocks per the MSD calendar noted as other will be during Christmas Break Spring Break and two weeks in the Summer without pay or available paid time off may be used.

Monday- Friday 7:30am-4:00pm

Payments are made on a bi-weekly basis from GECS payroll

Hourly pay is $24.39

This is a one-year contracted position and pay will be determined based upon experience. The position will be renewed annually with the mutual agreement of both parties.
