Job Summary

Position Summary

The Academic Advisor - TRIO Programs is responsible for the implementation of program activities such as academic counseling academic advising tutorials workshops seminars trips cultural enrichment and developing educational career and life goals for participants. The Academic Advisor will maintain well-organized records and activities in accordance with the requirements specified in the grant application and amendments approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

Appropriate placement on the Alabama Community College System salary scheduleC3-4.

This is a grant-funded and probationary status position. Continued employment is dependent on continued funding.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

At a minimum the essential functions of this position shall include:

At a minimum the essential functions of this position shall include:
1. Assists in the recruitment and selection of eligible program participants

2. Assists in designing and conducting orientation sessions for program participants

3. Schedules and meets with program participants regularly

4. Integrates best practices to support increased retention graduation rates and transfer rates of program participants

5. Assists program participants in developing educational career and life goals

6. Assists program participants with problem-solving/college-related issues such as encumbrances tuition issues computer accounts registration etc.

7. Diagnoses academic needs and advises students to register for the appropriate courses for a successful pathway to graduation and transfer

8. Assists in identifying recruiting assigning and supervising tutors

9. Assists in providing tutor training in SSS Policies and Procedures

10. Participates in all scheduled registration days for the College

11. Organizes and participates in college tours cultural activities and workshops that promote the goals and outcomes of the programs objectives (may involve nights and weekends)

12. Establishes and maintains program participant folders in accordance with the specifications of the grant proposal and the U.S. Department of Education

13. Follows up with program participants to ensure project outcomes and assessments are completed

14. Assists the program director in maintaining program rosters and providing follow-up for federal reports

15. Maintains comprehensive timely and accurate follow-up records for all assigned participants

  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited institution in an academic or educational discipline or related field OR equivalent recent relevant full-time work experience (two years of full-time recent relevant work experience for every one year of college).
  2. One year of experience in student personnel career counseling advising personal and academic counseling or related field.
  3. Experience working with diverse populations
  4. Excellent communication organization and interpersonal skills.
  5. Demonstrated skill with social media and online communication tools
  6. Experience in the use of current educational technologies in the workplace including word processing spreadsheets databases and presentation software

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Direct experience working with TRIO programs.
  2. Community College experience
  3. An understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of a comprehensive community college
  4. Ability to organize manage confidential information and oversee specialprojects through to completion
