Position Description:
The Academic Advisor I is a professional staffposition within Academic Affairs at the University of Northern Colorado. Thisposition is within the Advisor Network and is designed to support studentretention persistence andtimelydegree completion across all undergraduatedegree and certificate programs. Advisors serve as primary points of contactfor assigned undergraduate students academic advising aligned with UNCsmission as a Student-First Institution.
This position is structuredas a career ladder across three levels (Advisor I II and III) eachwithan increasing scope of responsibility autonomy and contributions toinstitutional leadership. At all levels the position is grounded ina developmentallyappropriateadvisingphilosophy the application of NACADA Core Competencies andacommitment toinclusive andresponsive student support.
Advisors work within thecollege advising centers coordinated by a lead advisor/director. TheLead/Director reports to their college associate dean. UG Academic Advisingconsists of approximately 16 advising professionals: 5 leads/directors 1assistant director and 10professional advisors(rangingfromLevels I II and III).
This positionisappropriate forindividuals committed to advising as a teachingand learning profession who can build trusting relationships with diversestudent populations navigate complex institutional systems and contributemeaningfully to the collective success of theundergraduateadvisingteam and the students UNC serves.
Multiple Vacancies:
Qualified candidates are sought to fill advisor positions across the Advisor Network. There are one or more vacancies in the following collegeadvisement centers: Performance &Visual Arts (PVA) Monfort College of Business (MCB) Education &Behavioral Sciences (CEBS) Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS) and Natural & Health Sciences (NHS) .
Primary Job Functions:
FunctionI: Academic Advising & Student Support 80%
Manage a caseload of approximately 300350 undergraduate students withproactive equity-centered advising. Support academic planning courseselection degree audits and graduation preparation. Guide students throughprogram exploration and institutional navigation with particular attention tofirst-generation and under represented populations. Facilitate transitionsincluding orientation mid-year entry re-entry and graduation timely detailed records in the university CRM and contribute to earlyalert processes.
Function II: Student SuccessRetention & Equity 10%
Monitor caseload data to identify at-risk students and initiateproactive outreach. Coordinate referrals to financial aid counselingtutoring disability services and other campus resources. Participate in earlyalert systems probation advising and reinstatement reviews. Contribute toequity initiatives by identifying and helping address systemic disparities instudent outcomes.
Function III: Collaboration Liaison &Institutional Partnership 5%
Serve as the advising liaison to assigned academic departments stayingcurrent on curricular changes and degree requirements. Partnercross-functionally with Admissions the Office of the Registrar Financial AidBursar Student Affairs and the Center for Career Readiness. Participate inteam meetings network-wide staff meetings and professional developmentactivities.
Function V: Assessment data & ProfessionalDevelopment 5%
Participate in unit assessment cycles including surveys and outcomereviews. Use institutional data degree audits persistence dashboards andearly alert reports to inform advising practice. Pursue ongoing professionaldevelopment aligned with NACADA Core Competencies through conferencestrainings and a professional growth portfolio.
Required Qualifications:
Abachelors degree. Minimum 02 years of professional experience in academicadvising student success student affairs or a closely related role. Relevantprevious student employment graduate assistantship or practicum experience inadvising or student services may be considered. New employees will require 612months of structured onboarding and supervised practice to reach fullindependent performance. Additionally a qualified candidate should demonstrate an understanding of howto build rapport with students from a variety of educational and demographicbackgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in advising undergraduatestudents is preferred as well as experience working in a student development orrelated program; experience with academic coaching methods in a universitysetting; experience providing academic personal emotional and crisis intervention support in a paraprofessional capacity; advising and coaching first-generation students and/or working for a Hispanic ServingInstitution (HSI) and/or advising and coaching students in success programssuch as TRiO.

After a three-month training period advisors are typically permitted oneday of remote work each week. Occasional night and weekend work will berequired in alignment with recruitment events programming andcelebrations.
