Academic Advisor I, College of Science (Multiple Positions)

The University of Arizonas College of Science invites you to apply for the role of Academic Advisor I. The Academic Advisor plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention and persistence by building formative relationships with students to encourage engagement with opportunities to develop personally and professionally.

This position is built for professionals who are interested in joining a Strategic Advising Team and receiving comprehensive cross-training to develop expertise across a family of majors (e.g. Physical Sciences Life Sciences Mathematical & Computational Sciences etc.). These student-centered collaborative Academic Advisors will provide high-quality advising across departments while maintaining consistency with college-wide advising standards and departmental expectations.

As members of a collaborative college-wide advising community these advisors help ensure students receive accurate timely and coordinated support regardless of major while increasing the Colleges ability to adapt to growth and evolving student needs.

The position reports centrally to the College but has strong connections to the departments it serves. The College of Science brings together students with a wide range of interests from environmental science to medicine and technology who are driven by curiosity and discovery. Students learn from internationally recognized faculty who lead groundbreaking research and contribute to advancements in scientific knowledge and teaching practices. Through hands-on research opportunities and mentorship students develop creative solutions to complex global challenges while working within a collaborative academic environment. The colleges mission emphasizes research excellence interdisciplinary learning community outreach and the preparation of future scientists across core scientific disciplines.

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work assignment in consultation with the supervisor.

Academic Advising & Student Development Duties:

• Under the guidance of leadership presents academic and program information to new first-year and transfer students and their guests at New Student Orientation and processes students for readmission.
• Guides students through academic planning degree requirements and university policies.
• Applies transfer credits from other academic institutions to students degree programs (based on established articulation rules and precedents).
• Builds meaningful relationships through proactive advising and individualized student support.
• Supports orientation retention and graduation initiatives.
• With leadership identifies or evaluates options for students who must petition for an exception to a course or program requirement; makes adjustments to students programs of study once approved.
• Monitors academic progress of students utilizing existing dashboards and reports; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g. study skills tutoring) and connects students with campus resources that promote academic success and well-being.
• Assesses students stage of development (academic career and personal) to promote academic growth by recommending suitable developmental tasks and engagement opportunities.

Advising Program & Additional Student Support:

• Reports to leadership on student barriers encountered during advising sessions.
• In collaboration with leadership may assist with offering seminars workshops and other activities/events for student onboarding building community academic recovery student engagement graduation and/or student retention as time allows.

Administrative:

• With direction from leadership may assist with manual enrollment into department courses including research preceptorships and internships for university credit.
• Processes degree audit worksheets for students planning to graduate.
• May assist with the planning and implementation of college and department events.

• Bachelors degree required.
• One year of relevant work experience required.

• Previous experience in higher education.
• Experience advising or working with undergraduate students.
