Job Summary
Hoag Health the top-ranked health system in Orange County California is seeking a collaborative innovative and mission-driven Abdominal Transplant Surgeon to join our growing abdominal transplant program based in Newport Beach California. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced transplant surgeon to help build a comprehensive kidney and liver transplant program from the ground up while shaping the clinical operational and quality infrastructure necessary to support long-term program success.
The ideal candidate will have fellowship training and demonstrated expertise in kidney transplantation liver transplantation decreased donor procurement and living donor nephrectomy. Experience in pancreas transplantation normothermic regional perfusion normothermic machine perfusion and living donor liver transplant are all desired but not necessary. Working in close partnership with transplant nephrology hepatology transplant infectious diseases anesthesiology critical care hospital leadership nursing pharmacy quality and other multidisciplinary teams the Abdominal Transplant Surgeon will play a central role in establishing a high-performing transplant program committed to exceptional clinical outcomes innovation and patient-centered care.
In this position you will balance a robust clinical surgical practice with leadership responsibilities that support the development and growth of Hoags abdominal transplant program. You will help establish clinical protocols participate in multidisciplinary program development support quality and regulatory initiatives mentor future team members and contribute to the strategic vision of one of Southern Californias premier transplant centers.
Details:
- Location: Primary practice location will be Newport Beach CA with potential clinical responsibilities at Hoag Irvine as the transplant program expands.
- Schedule: Monday through Friday with operating room clinic inpatient rounding and shared call responsibilities.
- Duties: Clinical responsibilities include the full spectrum of abdominal transplant surgery including kidney transplantation liver transplantation deceased donor organ recovery living donor nephrectomy and comprehensive perioperative management of transplant recipients. The surgeon will participate in outpatient transplant evaluation clinics inpatient transplant service multidisciplinary transplant selection conferences and organ offer review. Experience in pancreas transplantation is preferred. The surgeon will collaborate closely with transplant nephrology hepatology transplant infectious diseases anesthesiology critical care nursing pharmacy quality and hospital leadership to develop and grow a comprehensive abdominal transplant program while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety clinical excellence and regulatory compliance.
- Call: Shared abdominal transplant call responsibilities including donor procurement organ acceptance transplantation and management of urgent transplant surgical issues.
- Team: You will collaborate closely with transplant nephrologists hepatologists transplant infectious disease physicians anesthesiologists intensivists advanced practice providers transplant coordinators nursing pharmacy quality and hospital leadership to build a nationally recognized abdominal transplant program.
- Qualities: The ideal candidate will demonstrate outstanding technical expertise collaborative leadership excellent clinical judgment and a commitment to patient-centered evidence-based care. Candidates should possess experience building multidisciplinary programs fostering innovation supporting quality improvement initiatives and mentoring future members of the transplant team.
- Meetings: Participation in weekly multidisciplinary transplant selection conferences quality meetings morbidity and mortality conferences educational conferences and transplant governance committees is expected.

Requirements:
- M.D. or D.O. degree from a fully accredited medical or osteopathic school of medicine
- Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency
- Fellowship training in Abdominal Transplant Surgery from an ASTS-approved transplant fellowship program
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in General Surgery
- Demonstrated expertise in kidney transplantation liver transplantation deceased donor organ procurement and living donor nephrectomy
- Experience with pancreas and living donor liver transplantation is preferred
- Experience with NRP Organ Ox Transmedics and other modalities of machine perfusion is preferred
- Active unobstructed California medical license or the ability to obtain one
- Full prescriptive authority and an active DEA in California or the ability to obtain one
- Ability to successfully complete Hoag Healths credentialing process
