Agricultural Modern Apprentice
Job Summary
Main Purpose of Job
This job will be undertaken as a Modern Apprenticeship and so it is recognised that the post-holder will be undertaking appropriate in-house and external training and development.
- To assist under supervision with all work undertaken by the farm and field services section and gain experience in a broad range of practical and field research operations.
- Work as part of the team providing general support to the science group.
Main Duties of Postholder
- To undertake training both internally and externally and learn practical skills required to successfully gain modern apprenticeship.
- To receive training in all aspects of the work required to be undertaken by the section.
- To assist the fruit team managing and maintaining all fruit plots on the institute.
- To assist with cereal trials including sowing maintenance and harvesting.
- To assist with potato trials including ground preparation planting maintenance and harvest and transporting harvested crops to store.
- To assist with commercial cereal work including ground preparation
- maintenance and harvest of crops.
- To assist with the maintenance of the estate and machinery used by the department.
- To understand and comply with health and safety regulations the James Hutton Institute Health & Safety policy and specialist safety procedures appropriate to farm field and glasshouses work.
- Any other duties as required.
Person Specification
Essential
- National 5s including Maths and English
- Able to work as part of a team.
- Good verbal communication skills
Desirable
- Highers
- Tractor driving experience
- Experience of working with agricultural equipment
